BANGOR, Maine – Sophomore midfielder McKenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine) scored in the 63rd minute to propel Saint Joseph's College (2-0) past Husson University (0-1) in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday night.
THE LEAD
With 27 minutes left in regulation, Murphy took a determined step towards the ball flying off the foot of senior forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) from the corner and headed it directly into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Eagles' best opportunity to tie the game came with three minutes remaining, when Joan Overman outran several SJC defenders to create a 1v1 situation with freshman keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine). Grogan left her post to challenge and slid in front of the ball just as Overman drew back for a shot, knocking it safely away from her net to hold onto the 1-0 victory.
THE KEEPERS
Grogan made four saves for the Monks and became the first SJC netminder to record a shutout in her first two starts since Jackie Lorenzen '14 blanked Thomas and UMaine-Farmington in her first two tilts in 2010.
Husson keeper Sami Ireland made five saves in a hard luck loss.
TEAM STATS:
The Monks posted a 16-8 lead in shots with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams were awarded six corner kicks on the evening.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 35-7 all-time versus Husson University and has now defeated the Eagles in three-consecutive meetings with six triumphs in the last seven games overall versus Husson.
