STANDISH, Maine – Head Coach Jenelle Harris is pleased to announce the women's soccer Class of 2023.
Coach Harris, who is about to begin her seventh year as the Monks' skipper, is bringing in five players from three different states, as two forwards, two defenders, and one midfielder look to make their Royal Blue debut this fall. The newcomers will be asked to help Saint Joseph's defend the program's first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship.
"This talented incoming class joins our strong core of returners and we are looking to build off our championship season," adds Coach Harris. "We are excited to see what they can accomplish at the collegiate level. This class, along with our returners, will contribute to our program's philosophy of competitive fire, commitment, accountability, and family on and off the field."
Last fall, Saint Joseph's (16-4, 10-2 GNAC) - the #2 seed in the 2018 GNAC Tournament - claimed the first GNAC Championship in program history with a 1-0 upset victory at top-seeded Lasell College on Sunday, November 25, 2018 4th. The Monks faced #12 Swarthmore College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Pennsylvania and fell to the Garnet on their home turf, 5-1, on November 10th.
The incoming class figures to help ease the loss of the 2019 graduates, a group that featured six four-year players: Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine), Michaela MacDonald (New Gloucester, Maine), Skye Murray (Dayton, Maine), Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.), Emily Thornton (Westbrook, Maine), and Angela Valenti (Litchfield, N.H.). DaGraca (20), Thornton (7), and Sheehan (5) combined to score 32 of the Monks' 50 goals last season. DaGraca, a two-time GNAC Player of the Year honoree, graduated owning the team's career records in goals (70), points (155), game-winners (20), and shots (403).
The 2019 campaign begins on Friday, August 30th with a 7:00 PM non-conference game at University of New England.
