STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0-1) blanked Husson University (0-1-0), 3-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks dominated play for the duration but were unable to generate a true scoring opportunity until the 56th minute when junior Madeline Wood (Madison, Maine) steered a shot taken from the top of the box into the right side of the net.

Saint Joseph's continued to maintain offensive pressure for most of the second half and the efforts paid off with a pair of tallies in a matter of 90 seconds during the closing minutes of the contest.

Sophomore Kayley Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with a nifty deflection into the bottom left corner off an Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) pass at the 86:17 mark.

Just over a minute later, freshman Madison Michaud (Presque Isle, Maine) netted her first collegiate goal with a dart just under the crossbar and beyond the extended arms of Husson junior keeper Shie Smith (Winthrop, Maine). Mattos was credited with an assist on the play.

Trailing 1-0 with 38 minutes on the second-half clock, the Eagles nearly knotted the score when they broke free with an odd-man rush in their offensive end.  SJC sophomore goalie Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) left her post to challenge outside the box and the ball wound up on the foot of freshman midfielder Alexa Thayer (New Gloucester, Maine), who missed a wide open net with a shot that clanged off the crossbar.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held decisive advantages in shots (28-4), shots on goal (16-1), and corner kicks (8-1) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

Grogan turned away the only shot she faced in the shutout triumph while Smith registered 12 saves in the losing effort for Husson.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's improves to 36-7 all-time versus Husson University and has now defeated the Eagles in four-consecutive meetings with seven victories in the last seven meetings featuring the former conference rivals.

Saint Joseph's will play at University of Maine-Farmington on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
