St. Joe’s Tips Albertus, 1-0

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Alicen Burnham (Monmouth, Maine) scored in the 33rd minute and senior keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) made six saves to help lift Saint Joseph's College (5-4-0, 5-0-0 GNAC) past Albertus Magnus College (4-3-0, 2-2-0 GNAC), 1-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After 32 minutes of even play, the Monks were awarded a free kick from just beyond the midfield stripe and Grogan came forward to send the ball into the box, where Burnham corralled the bouncing ball and laced an odd angle shot from the right side to the upper left corner of the net.

The Monks had chances to score earlier, as junior Madison Michaud (Presque Isle, Maine) took a shot that hit the left post at the 3:41 mark and senior Eilidh Sidaway (Dedham, Maine) clanged a free kick off the crossbar from about 30 yards out in the 21st minute.

The Falcons poured on the offensive pressure in the closing minutes but were unable to convert, as junior Keelin Sweeney (Hollis, Maine) steered away a shot in the crease in the 87th minute and Grogan swatted a shot over the top left corner just over a minute later.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (17-12) and shots on goal (9-7) while Albertus Magnus notched a 4-3 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

Grogan steered away six shots in the shutout victory while Albertus Magnus sophomore goalie Michelle Mecca (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) played well in the loss with eight saves.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result Saint Joseph's improves to 10-4-1 all-time versus Albertus Magnus College and has now defeated the Falcons in four-straight meetings dating back to the 2017 campaign.
