Monks Complete Sweep Over Blazers

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College women's swim team defeated Elms College, 141-111, in what was the Monks' 2014-15 home-opener at the Harold Alfond Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.

The men's team also won, 116-102, in one of the most tightly contested events in recent memory. With the result on the line going into the last race – the 200-Free relay – the Monks pushed past the Blazers in the final two legs, swam by junior Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) and senior Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine), to clinch the victory with a 1:37.40 effort, barely two seconds ahead of the Elms quartet.

For Saint Joseph's, the sweep – wins for both teams on the same date - is the second in as many events this season, as the Royal Blue toppled Husson University in Bangor last Saturday. The SJC swim program has now recorded a pair of sweeps in the same season for the first time in the team's eight-year history. Also, St. Joe's has never before had both sides open with 2-0 starts to a season.

Sophomore Lauren Prue (Glenburn, Maine) helped lead the women to victory with top finishes in the 100-Breast (1:18.61) and 200-IM (2:39.36) and also placed second in the 50-Breast (36.52) while classmate Lauren Halvorsen (South Portland, Maine) won the 1000-Free (12:21.67) by a wide margin and also topped the field in the 500-Free (6:05.00) race.

Sophomore Danielle Charette (Westfield, Mass.) placed first in the 200-Free (2:13.09) and finished second in the 100-Back (1:11.45) and 500-Free (6:11.67) events while junior Brooke Huberdeau (North Andover, Mass.) topped a competitive field with a 1:02.85 time in the 100-Free and posted a second-place finish in the 200-Free (2:13.33).

Junior Anne Fougere (Warner, N.H.) recorded a first-place finish in the 50-Breast (36.47) and took second in the 100-Breast (1:20.42) and sophomore Erin Weir (North Andover, Mass.) placed second in the 50-Back (33.61) and 50-Free (29.30) races and also swam a leg for the Monks' top-finishing 200-Medley relay team, along with Fougere, Huberdeau and Alexandra Krasco (Melrose, Mass.).

Saint Joseph's returns to the pool next Saturday with a home event versus Regis College starting at 1:00 PM.
