Eagles Nip Monks, 3-2

Nashua, N.H. – Rookie Courtney Warrington (Canton, Tex.) notched 13 kills and 18 digs and fellow freshman Amanda Gendron (Mont Vernon, N.H.) added 11 kills as host Daniel Webster outlasted Saint Joseph's of Maine, 3-2 in a grueling two-hour plus women's volleyball marathon Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

The Eagles (2-10) halted a four-game skid and survived after spotting the Monks (4-8) a one-set lead and then allowed SJC back into the match by dropping the fourth after taking the second and third for a 2-1 lead.

But the Eagles survived a fifth set thriller that saw seven ties to earn the 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, and 17-15 victory. DWC's victory was its first over the Monks since 2010.

DWC saw its most even offensive distribution of the season. Ayohnny Guy-Scott (Claymont, Del.) notched nine kills, Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) had eight kills and a pair of career-highs with eight aces and 22 digs, and Sharline Polycarpe (Dorchester, Mass.) notched eight kills. Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) dished off a match-high 35 assists while Maggie Belli (Miami, Fla.) pulled in a match-best 24 digs.

Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, N.H.) led SJC with a match-best 16 kills and four solo blocks, chipping in with seven digs. Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) added nine kills and 22 digs while Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) added seven kills. Abbie McPhee (Epping, N.H.) handed out 28 assists and Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) pulled in 21 digs.

DWC finished with a 51-44 total kills advantage despite hitting .066 to the Monks .110. The teams combined for an impressive 190 digs (96-94 Eagles) while SJC posted a big advantage at the net with 11 total blocks to just four for DWC.

But the hosts caused problems for the Monks all night at the service line racking up a season-high 24 aces while limiting the visitors to nine. SJC committed 24 service errors to just nine for DWC. Along with Roulier's eight aces, Beard, Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) and Belli all posted four to the stat sheet. Warrington and Kaitlyn Mitchell (Voluntown, Conn.) chipped in with two apiece.

The deciding set saw DWC hold serve keeping one-point leads up to 5-4 and forged ahead by three (7-4) after back-to-back Gendron kills and pushed the lead to as large as five (11-6) after a Beard kill.

A 5-1 Monk rally keyed by two Eagle errors and a Copp kill cut the lead to 12-11 before Warrington pushed DWC to within two of victory at 13-11.

But a Wachowiak kill and a DWC unforced error knotted things at 13. The teams traded points to get to 15-all before a Roulier solo block pushed DWC to its second match point and a SJC attack error closed the match at 17-15.

In all, the match saw 34 ties and 10 lead changes.

The Eagles return to action Thursday night when they host St. Joseph's of Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.

The Monks return to action on Thursday visiting Bates at 7:00 p.m.
