Alexis Michal Named as SJC Women’s Volleyball Head Coach

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College Athletics Director Brian Curtin has announced that Alexis Michal has been hired as the Monks' head women's volleyball coach.

Michal, a Windham, New Hampshire native who attended Central Catholic High School, comes to Saint Joseph's after registering a successful collegiate career at Keene State College, where she served as a two-year team captain and four-year starter.

Michal has coached in various capacities, including stints with MassPike Volleyball, Latitude 42 Volleyball, and the Merrimack Valley Volleyball Clinic, over the past several years.

An excellent student, she graduated Cum Laude from Keene State with a Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences Community Health in 2016 and garnered a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) Academic Team accolades during her career.

"We are excited to have Alexis on board as the head coach of our volleyball program," adds Curtin. "With passion for her sport and proven leadership skills, she certainly has a bright future in coaching."

As a college player, Michal tallied 2,595 assists, 1,229 digs, and 176 aces in 133 matches (498 sets) while helping lead Keene State to an 83-55 (.601) overall record, including a 23-5 (.821) mark in conference play, with three LEC Tournament Championship appearances. As a freshman, she played an important role on an Owls team that advanced to the ECAC Tournament semifinals.

Primarily a setter who also logged time as the Owls' libero, Michal left Keene State ranked among the program's career leaders in assists (2nd), digs (4th), and aces (6th).

Michal fills the position vacated by former Head Coach Yamile Nolan, who stepped down late last spring to accept the head-coaching job at Dominican University of California, an NCAA DII institution located near San Francisco. In six years as the Monks' clipboard carrier, Nolan posted a 112-74 (.602) overall record and guided Saint Joseph's to five Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament appearances.

Saint Joseph's kicks off the 2016 season with a home match versus Maine Maritime Academy on Friday, September 2nd. Opening service is slated for 8:00 PM in the Harold Alfond Center Gymnasium.
