Monks Split on First Night of SJC Autumn Invitational

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-3) split a pair of contests in the 17th Annual SJC Autumn Invitational at the Harold Alfond Center on Friday evening. The Monks opened with a 3-0 victory over University of Maine-Presque Isle (1-10) (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) and fell to Maine-Fort Kent (7-3) (17-25, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25) in four sets.

On court two, Husson University (6-6) fell to Maine-Fort Kent, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-11), in the 6:00 PM match and rebounded to sweep (26-24, 25-18, 25-14) Maine-Presque Isle (1-10).

Tournament action resumes tomorrow at 10:00 AM when Saint Joseph's faces Husson on court one and Maine-Fort Kent takes on Maine-Presque Isle on court two. The Championship and Consolation games will be played at 12:00 PM.

TOURNAMENT LEADERS

Saint Joseph's def. Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16)

Saint Joseph's rarely trailed in a sweep victory over Maine-Presque Isle as the hosts held sizeable advantages in kills (37-8), assists (33-7), and digs (40-25) and posted a .220 attack percentage in the tourney opener. Comparatively, the Owls recorded a negative .079 attack rate with more errors (13) than kill in the setback.

SAINT JOSEPH'S LEADERS

  • Senior Shadai Gosselin (Somersworth, N.H.) tallied 12 kills with nine digs and five service aces
  • Senior Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) registered 10 kills with seven digs
  • Sophomore Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) added 17 digs
  • Sophomore Emma Tirrell (Scarborough, Maine) delivered 22 assists

MAINE-PRESQUE ISLE LEADERS

  • Freshman Sara Boies (Baileyville, Maine) posted a team-high three kills
  • Senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, Maine) netted two kills and 10 digs
  • Freshman Cheyenne McMillen (Bells, Texas) added two kills with two assists and four digs

Maine-Fort Kent def. Husson, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-11)

Maine-Fort Kent blanked Husson in a match that required just over an hour to complete with the help of 20 kills, a .164 attack percentage, and 11 service aces. The Eagles countered with 12 kills, a negative .085 hitting rate, and a pair of aces in the shutout loss.

MAINE-FORT KENT LEADERS

  • Senior Fabiola Gutierrez (Lindsay, Calif.) produced five kills – with no attack errors – and 12 digs
  • Senior Brianna Krystek (Fairfield, Calif.) notched four kills, eight digs, and three assists
  • Junior Selina Castro (Fairfield, Calif.) added two kills, 12 assists, and 10 digs
  • Junior Kamalani Kahele (Kalihi, Hawaii) chipped in with three aces and nine digs

HUSSON LEADERS

  • Sophomore Kaitlyn Woods (Charlton, Mass.) netted four kills and seven digs
  • Freshman Katelyn McKenzie (Saco, Maine) added 11 digs
  • Junior Nia Arranaga (San Jose, Calif.) chimed in with three kills
  • Freshman Riley Mooers (Mount Desert, Maine) contributed seven assists and six digs

Maine-Fort Kent def. Saint Joseph's, 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19)

The Bengals managed to defeat the Monks in four sets after producing 33 kills, nine aces, and eight block solos in a match that was close from start to finish. Despite the final score, the Monks held advantages in kills (41-33) and assists (38-32) and nearly equaled the Bengals' digs tally (89-87) in a losing effort.

SAINT JOSEPH'S LEADERS

  • Junior Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) led all players with 11 kills and a stellar .429 attack percentage – tying a career-high - along with five digs and a pair of block solos
  • Gosselin tallied nine kills, three assists, and 15 digs and surpassed the 500-career kill mark in the setback
  • Huntley contributed six kills, two aces, and 15 digs
  • Thompson added 21 digs with three kills
  • The freshman duo of Chatham Mills (Gorham, Maine) and Kelsey Bickford (Somersworth, N.H.) combined to produce nine kills
  • Tirrell chipped in with 21 assists and five digs
  • Freshman Bailey Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine) contributed with 15 digs

MAINE-FORT KENT LEADERS

  • Krystek registered 10 kills, 13 digs, and a pair of aces
  • Senior Sweet Vaimoui (Laia, Hawaii) notched 10 kills, four digs, and three block solos
  • Fabiola Gutierrez chimed in with five kills, four aces, and 14 digs
  • Kahele scooped up 23 digs
  • Castro tallied 29 assists and 13 digs

Husson def. Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-14)

The Eagles outpaced the Owls in kills (22-9), assists (20-7), and service aces (12-6) to earn the sweep and improve to 1-1 in invitational play. Both teams tallied the same amount of kills and errors while sporting a .000 attack rate in the court two nightcap.

HUSSON LEADERS

  • Junior Bailey Cote (Biddeford, Maine) tallied seven kills in 25 attempts
  • Arranaga netted five kills, four aces, and five digs
  • Woods added 18 digs
  • Freshman Mary Grace Power (Bellerose Village, N.Y.) delivered six kills, four aces, and 15 digs
  • Freshman Delaney Chisholm (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded 17 digs and a pair of aces

MAINE-PRESQUE ISLE LEADERS

  • McMillen registered three kills and 18 digs
  • Freshman Esmeralda Galvan (Bullhead City, Ariz.) picked up 15 digs
  • Jewett added three kills and 14 digs
  • Sophomore Hannah Williams (Park Falls, Nova Scotia) tallied three kills and 11 digs
  • Freshman Laura Aroz (Tucson, Ariz.) contributed six assists, two service aces, and nine digs
 

Tiebreaker Rules – if after Saturday's 10a games two teams have the same record, we will break the tie using the following criteria, in this order, to determine seeds and home teams for the championship and consolation games:

2. Number of Games Lost

3. Point Differential (add P.D. for wins and P.D. losses (ONLY versus team tied with) then subtract)
