Monks Fall to Panthers in 2017 Home Opener, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Plymouth State University (3-2) cruised past Saint Joseph's College (1-3), 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-21) in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

The visiting Panthers were in control from the start as evidenced by their sizeable advantages in kills (35-17), assists (32-15), aces (9-1), and digs (48-36) in the three-set sweep. After posting negative hitting rates in the first two sets, the Monks fought back with a .147 mark in the third frame, but ultimately fell by four points (25-21) in suffering their second shutout defeat of the year.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore Chatham Mills (Gorham, Maine) led the Monks with five kills in the team's 2017 home opener
  • Freshman Erin Olson (Stoughton, Mass.) delivered four kills
  • Junior Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) chipped in with 15 digs
  • Junior Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) tallied 14 assists
  • Senior Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) posted two kills and three block solos

LEADERS – PLYMOUTH STATE:

  • Junior Ari Linden (Lena, Ill.) led all players with 13 kills – with a .333 hitting rate - and added three block solos with a pair of aces for 18 total points
  • Senior Claire Sporer (Medford, Ore.) contributed eight kills and six digs
  • Sophomore Alexis Bowers (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) boasted six kills and a .333 attack percentage
  • Senior Megan Bailey (Canterbury, N.H.) notched a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs
  • Senior Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) registered 21 digs

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 3-16 in the history of the series with Plymouth State University, a team that went 22-11 and advanced to the Little East Conference Championship match last fall.

Saint Joseph's hosts the SJC Autumn Invitational this Friday and Saturday and plays Maine-Presque Isle (5:00 PM) and Maine-Fort Kent (7:00 PM) on Friday evening.
