Monks Blow Past Nor'easters, 3-0

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-4) swept University of New England (2-8) in three sets (25-17, 30-28, 25-18) in a non-conference volleyball match on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After cruising to a 25-17 first-set triumph, the Monks faced a 24-21 deficit late in the second before the Nor'easters committed a pair of errors and senior Jordynne Copp (Cumberland, Maine) belted a kill to tie the set. The in-state rivals then traded points until freshman Sophia Randall (Epping, N.H.) broke a 28-28 deadlock with a kill and delivered a service ace to extend her team's match lead to 2-0.

With momentum clearly in their corner, the Monks went on to claim the third set, and break a 10-10 tie, with the help of a 15-8 run.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore Kelsey Bickford (Somersworth, N.H.) registered nine kills and six digs
  • Junior Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) notched a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs and added five kills on nine attempts
  • Junior Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) added 26 digs and three aces
  • Copp posted five kills with no errors on 15 attempts with four total blocks
  • Randall chipped in with five kills, four aces, and 11 digs

LEADERS – UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND:

  • Paige Simoneau belted a match-high 11 kills with nine digs
  • Molly Camelo contributed 10 kills and 21 digs with a .364 hitting percentage
  • Kristen Falcinelli added 19 assists and 10 digs
  • Katie Marsh posted 13 digs

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in attack percentage (.156 - .090), aces (9-8), and digs (68-63) while UNE owned advantages in kills (34-33) and assists (32-30) on the evening.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-53 versus University of New England (since 1989), a team the Monks have now defeated in four of the last six meetings.

NEXT!

The Monks kick off Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday with a tri-match at Regis (Mass.), first facing the Pride at 10:00 AM then taking on Amherst College in a non-conference match at 12:00 PM.
