Roberts Named Head Volleyball Coach

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College Athletics Director Brian Curtin has announced that Jon Roberts has been hired as the Monks' head women's volleyball coach.

One of the most respected high school and club volleyball coaches in the region, Roberts will be the first full-time head coach in the 38-year history of the SJC women's volleyball program.

Roberts comes to Saint Joseph's after serving as the head coach of the Scarborough High School girls volleyball program for the last eight years. Since 2010, Roberts has also been heavily involved in the Maine club volleyball scene, as he has been a coach for the Maine Juniors Volleyball Club for eight years and took on the role of Volleyball Technical Director for the club in 2015.

During his time at Scarborough High School, Roberts led the Red Storm to a pair of Class A Maine State Championships, five State Championship appearances, and trips to the postseason on eight occasions in as many years. He was recognized as the Maine Volleyball Coaches Association Class A Coach of the Year twice and also garnered a pair of Portland Press Herald High School Volleyball Coach of the Year honors.

"I feel very fortunate to be named Saint Joseph's College first full-time head volleyball coach," adds Roberts. "Saint Joseph's has made a significant commitment to the success of the volleyball program with the creation of this new position. There is a great history of successful sports teams on campus and I am very excited to start building the volleyball program up to that level."

Roberts, who grew up in Storrs, Connecticut, began his coaching career in 2003 as an assistant at Coventry High School, where he helped lead the team to six State Championships.

"We are excited to have Jon join our staff," adds Curtin. "He brings a thoughtful, professional approach to his coaching and has a genuine desire to help students grow and help the sport grow."

Coach Roberts earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from University of Connecticut in 1996 and played club volleyball at UConn for two years. He was a member of the team that advanced to the collegiate club national tournament in 1996.

Roberts fills the position vacated by Alexis Michal, who served as the Monks' head coach for two years and compiled a 26-31 (.459) record – including a 12-11 (.523) mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play – with a pair of GNAC tournament appearances during her time on the SJC bench.

Saint Joseph's kicks off the 2018 season with a non-conference match at University of New England on Friday, August 31st. Opening service is slated for 8:00 PM.
