Monks Fall to Nor'easters in 2018 Opener, 3-1

CASTINE, Maine — University of New England (1-0) fought from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's College of Maine (0-1) 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21), on Friday night at Smith Gymnasium on the campus of Maine Maritime Academy.

Junior Kelsey Bickford (Somersworth, N.H.) led Saint Joseph's with 13 digs, eight kills, and two blocks and senior setter Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) paced the Monks with 19 assists and 18 digs while also contributing a pair of kills and two aces. Sophomore Erin Olson (Stoughton, Mass.) chipped in with four aces, three kills, two digs, and a solo block in the losing effort.

Molly Camelo paced the Nor'easters with 11 kills, seven digs and an ace, while teammate Sydney Christiansen led all players with 25 assists and contributed five kills, five digs, and three aces. Katie Flynn tallied a match-high 22 digs, while also tallying five kills, an assist and an ace. Paige Simoneau led all players with six aces and also added nine digs, two kills and an assist.

Saint Joseph's returns to action with a pair of matches in Castine tomorrow, as the Monks face Southern Maine at 12:00 PM and take on Maine Maritime Academy at 4:00 PM.
