Saint Joseph’s Drops Pair at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (0-3) suffered a pair of losses at Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened the day with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-13) loss at the hands of University of Southern Maine (2-1) and closed out the weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) setback versus the host Mariners (3-0).

USM 3 - Saint Joseph's 0 (21-13, 21-15, 21-13)

The service game played a huge factor in the Monks' second match of the season, as the Huskies delivered 15 aces while the Royal Blue notched just two daggers with 11 serve errors in the 3-0 defeat.

St. Joe's showed promise on the attack, as three players registered at least four kills with sophomore Erin Olson (Stoughton, Mass.) netting a match-high seven while freshmen Nicole Baron (Derry, N.H.) and Sarah Quinn (Dover, N.H.) delivered five and four kills, respectively.

History was made in second set when senior libero Jennelle Thompson (Rochester, N.H.) became the first SJC player to hit the 2,000-career digs mark. She entered the match needing four digs to reach the plateau and finished the day with 2,011 career digs over 91 matches (325 sets).

Senior Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) and sophomore Sophia Randall (Epping, N.H.) both dealt seven assists in the three-set loss.

Jamie Jannarones led the Huskies with four aces and four kills. Kacey Foerster and Alexis Dow also chipped in with four kills. Nicole Schmitz had 17 assists and nine digs and Lauren Delissio led USM with 12 digs and contributed three aces.

Maine Maritime 3 – Saint Joseph's 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22)

The Mariners employed a solid .232 attack percentage, led by an impressive performance from Rachel Melampy who delivered 15 kills in 30 attempts, and held a substantial 40-14 advantage in kills in what was Maine Maritime's first-ever three-set sweep over Saint Joseph's.

Olson registered another fine performance with five kills, four block assists, and a .364 attack rate, while Randall was credited with seven assists and Thompson posted eight digs.

For the Mariners, Maria Perez led the match with 13 kills while also tallying three assists and Sydney Adams recorded a match-high 31 assists, while also recording seven digs, six kills and two aces.
