Year: 2nd Season

Alexis Michal was hired as the Monks’ head women’s volleyball coach prior to the start of the 2016 season.

In Coach Michal's first year at the helm, the Monks posted a 12-13 record with a 6-5 record in GNAC play. Saint Joseph's played particularly well late in the season, including a solid 9-4 record during the month of October with important five-set victories over GNAC foes University of Saint Joseph, Mount Ida College, and Emmanuel College en route to earning the #6 seed in the GNAC Tournament. With the sixth seed, the Monks traveled to Anna Maria College to face the #3 AMCATS and nearly pulled off an upset. Down 0-2, St. Joe's rallied back to force a fifth set but ultimately fell short with a 15-9 deciding set loss.

In 2016, two players garnered postseason conference accolades, as sophomore libero Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) was named as the 2016 GNAC Libero of the Year and earned First Team All-GNAC honors while senior outside hitter Victoria Huntley (Ellsworth, Maine) collected Third Team All-GNAC acclaim.

Michal, a Windham, New Hampshire native who attended Central Catholic High School, comes to Saint Joseph’s after registering a successful collegiate career at Keene State College, where she served as a two-year team captain and four-year starter.

Michal has coached in various capacities, including stints with MassPike Volleyball, Latitude 42 Volleyball, and the Merrimack Valley Volleyball Clinic, over the past several years.

An excellent student, she graduated Cum Laude from Keene State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences Community Health in 2016 and garnered a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) Academic Team accolades during her career.

“We are excited to have Alexis on board as the head coach of our volleyball program,” adds Curtin. “With passion for her sport and proven leadership skills, she certainly has a bright future in coaching.”

As a college player, Michal tallied 2,595 assists, 1,229 digs, and 176 aces in 133 matches (498 sets) while helping lead Keene State to an 83-55 (.601) overall record, including a 23-5 (.821) mark in conference play, with three LEC Tournament Championship appearances. As a freshman, she played an important role on an Owls team that advanced to the ECAC Tournament semifinals.

Primarily a setter who also logged time as the Owls’ libero, Michal left Keene State ranked among the program’s career leaders in assists (2nd), digs (4th), and aces (6th).
