Runner-up Finish for Women in Monks Early Bird 5K

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College women's cross country team opened the 2014 season with a runner-up finish in the Monks Early Bird 5K race, which was held at the SJC course on Saturday morning. Senior Amber Dostie (Standish, Maine) placed second with a 20:41 performance and was the top Saint Joseph's runner in the event.

With 12 of the top 14 runners, University of New England cruised to the team victory with 22 points. Nor'easters junior Lexie Basilliere (Kingston, N.H.) won the 5K race with a 20:29 effort while UNE freshman Angel Waters (Limerick, Maine) placed third with a 20:56 time.

For Saint Joseph's, senior Heather Eaton (Lincolnville, Maine) finished fourth after touring the 5K trail in 21:27 while senior Audrey Curry (Perry, Maine) placed 17th (25:04), junior Grace Dancoes (Falmouth, Maine) was 18th (25:08) and junior Riley Jones (Winslow, Maine) finished 19th (25:32) in the season opener.

Sophomores Kristina Schelling (Pelham, N.H.) (27th, 26:44), Marisa Lundy (Merrimac, Mass.) (28th, 27:16) and Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine) (31st, 33:19) also participated in the 5K event.

Lasell College, which featured four runners and did not score in the Early Bird race, was led by junior Jamie Russo (Watertown, Mass.), who finished 15th with a 24:45 performance.

Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday with an appearance in the UNE Invitational, which is set to begin at 11:30 AM at Rotary Park in Biddeford.
