Women Finish Seventh at State Championship

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Saint Joseph's women's cross country team finished seventh with 205 points in the 2014 Maine Collegiate Championship at Mount Blue High School on Saturday. Seniors Amber Dostie (Standish, Maine) and Heather Eaton (Lincolnville, Maine) placed 25th and 29th with 20:50 and 21:03 times, respectively.

Sophomore Marie Harrington (Limerick, Maine) posted a 23:24 effort and finished 82nd, junior Grace Dancoes (Falmouth, Maine) was 99th with a 24:39 performance, senior Audrey Curry (Perry, Maine) placed 107th with a 25:08 time, and junior Riley Jones (Winslow, Maine) toured the 5K course in 25:30, good for a 109th place finish.

Sophomores Kristina Schelling (Pelham, N.H.) (26:08, 116th), Marisa Lundy (Merrimac, Mass.) (28:37, 130th) and Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine) (35:15, 144th) also competed in the state meet for the Monks.

Colby College won the event, for the eighth time in the last 11 years, with 34 points as the Mules placed all five scorers in the top 13 overall. University of New England was the runner-up with 60 points, Bates College placed third with 61, Bowdoin College finished fourth with 112 and Southern Maine rounded out the top five with 131 points.

Husson University (176 points), Maine-Farmington (221), Thomas College (283), Maine Maritime (319) and Maine-Presque Isle (335) capped the field of 11 participating institutions.

Individually, Colby placed the top two runners as Alanna McDonough won the race with a 19:23 time and Krista Brown was right behind with a 19:25 performance. Elena Jay of Bates was third (19:35) while a pair of UNE runners – Brittney Sorbello (19:38) and Tiana Thomas (19:40) rounded out the top five participants in what was a very competitive finish.

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday, November 1st when the team hosts the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship.
