Cross Country Opens Season Against UNE

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College cross country teams hosted an Early Bird meet on Saturday, hosting in-state rival University of New England on the SJC course. The women ran a 5K race while the man participated in a truncated 6K event.

The women were led by Heather Eaton (Lincolnville, Maine), who posted a 20:50 time to place second overall, behind UNE's Rose Earl, who raced to victory with a 20:45 performance.

Freshmen runners Sarah Curtin (Strafford, N.H.) and Maureen Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) both placed in the top 10, finishing fifth (22:47) and 10th (23:33), respectively.

Sophomore Lucas Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) paced the men with a 22:56 performance, just five seconds behind UNE's Casey Hubbard, who won the event with a 22:51 time.

Seniors Taidghe Hagan (Reading, Mass.), Connor Dufour (Augusta, Maine) and Andrew Caron (Augusta, Maine) placed ninth (24:00), 11th (24:38) and 13th (25:06), respectively.

THE RUNDOWN - WOMEN

  • Freshman Lauren Lecompte (Lewiston, Maine) was 15th with a 24:17 effort
  • Junior Kristina Schelling (Pelham, N.H.) placed 23rd (26:36)
  • Junior Jill Keimach (Scarborough, Maine) finished 26th in her first collegiate cross country race with a 28:30 performance
  • Junior Megan McLaughlin (Kingston, N.H.), also making her debut on the trails, placed 28th with a 33:02 time

THE RUNDOWN – MEN

  • Junior standout Nick Shuckrow (Winslow, Maine), who is recovering from several ailments, placed 20th (26:50)
  • Senior Billy Brooks (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), racing in his first cross country event since August 30th of the 2014 season, finished 23rd with a 32:59 effort

UP NEXT

  • The Monks are off until Saturday, September 12th when both teams participate in the University of New England Invitational at Rotary Park in Biddeford
  • Last fall, the SJC women finished sixth with 167 points at UNE, while the men were sixth with 152 team points in the annual event
  • Shuckrow led the men's team with a 14th-place finish (27:39) while Eaton is the Monks' top returner after finishing 22nd with a 20:56 effort in last year's race at UNE
