Saint Joseph's Competes in Maine State Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Saint Joseph's College competed in the 2017 Maine State Cross Country Championship, hosted by Bowdoin College, on Saturday afternoon. The SJC women finished seventh with 199 points while the men placed eighth with 223 points.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

  • Sophomore Marisa Quirion (Gardiner, Maine) paced the Monks and finished 38th overall with a 20:50 effort
  • Junior Sarah Curtin (Strafford, N.H.) posted a 21:47 time and was 58th overall
  • Freshman Meghan Glisson (Merrimack, N.H.) raced to a 75th place finish (22:38)
  • Freshman Elizabeth Cummons (Lincolnville, Maine) was 80th (22:59)
  • Freshman Britney Theroux (West Warwick, R.I.) placed 85th (23:13)
  • Freshman Lindsey Barrow (Granby, Conn.) finished 86th (23:15)
  • Sophomore Analyse Harris (Windham, Maine) was 87th (23:15)
  • Sophomore Amanda Tavoletti (Reading, Mass.) placed 91st (23:23)
  • Freshman Emma Belyea (Caribou, Maine) posted a 23:26 time and finished 92nd
  • Junior Kelsey Barrett (Gardiner, Maine) was 97th (23:44)
  • Sophomore Mckenzie Pepin (Windham, Maine) finished 99th (23:55)
  • Freshman Holly Moores (Rollinsford, N.H.) placed 102nd (24:21)
  • Junior Alysha Smith (Jaffrey, N.H.) was 103rd (24:24)
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Beaudoin (Fayette, Maine) finished 107th (24:31)
  • Freshman Elisha Pratt (Poland, Maine) placed 119th (25:23)
  • Freshman Bridget Porter (Dracut, Mass.) was 122nd (25:41)

RECAP:

With five individuals in the top eight and 21 points overall, Bates College cruised to the State Championship for the second-consecutive season and fourth time in the last six years. Bates senior Katherine Cook paced the 150-runner field with a 17:47 time, 12 seconds faster than the runner-up, her sophomore teammate Olivia LaMarche. Cook's time is the fastest recorded in the Maine State Championship in the last 15 years.

Bowdoin College finished second with 41 points, University of New England was third (73), Southern Maine finished fourth (138), and UMaine-Farmington rounded out the top five teams with 151 points.

Colby College (158), Saint Joseph's, Husson University (235), Maine Maritime (274), Maine-Augusta (296), Thomas College (348), and Maine-Presque Isle (349) also competed in this year's event.

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

  • Senior Lucas Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) finished 51st with a 28:55 performance
  • Freshman Brandon Whitlock (Westbrook, Maine) placed 75th with a 30:18 time
  • Sophomore Jacob Boissonnault (Biddeford, Maine) was 78th (30:26)
  • Sophomore Ben Plante (Biddeford, Maine) finished 83rd (30:47)
  • Freshman JD Ndayishimiye (Westbrook, Maine) raced to an 86th place finish (31:02)
  • Freshman Connor Rice (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) placed 91st (31:26)
  • Freshman Michael Mason (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was 100th (32:37)
  • Sophomore Andrew D'Ovidio (Walpole, Mass.) finished 113th (33:35)
  • Sophomore Alex Fitzgerald (Lebanon, Maine) placed 118th (33:59)
  • Freshman Nick Baston (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was 141st (39:08)
  • Junior Joshua Hunter (Lawrence, Mass.) finished 146th (44:25)

RECAP:

With 31 points, Bates also won the men's event, topping the Maine State field for the 7th time in the last 15 years and fifth time in the last seven seasons. The Bobcats featured four runners in the top seven overall and edged Bowdoin, which posted 42 points, for the State crown.

Bowdoin junior Ben Torda eclipsed the 146-runner field with a 25:25 time, while Sean MacDonald, Torda's teammate, finished as the runner-up after touring the 8K course in 25:42.

Southern Maine finished third (69), University of New England was fourth (149), and Colby placed fifth (159) while UMaine-Farmington (171), Maine Maritime (203), Saint Joseph's, Husson (281), Thomas (290), Maine-Presque Isle (328), and Maine-Augusta (339) also competed in the annual championship event.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday, October 28th when both teams run in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship at Colt State Park in Rhode Island.
