Co-Female Student Athlete of the Year: Julia Ostrowski - Senior, Field Hockey

Three-time SJC Female Student Athlete of the Year Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) has garnered seven Dean’s List honors, three NFHCA All-Academic awards and a pair of NAC All-Academic accolades as a Finance and Accounting major at Saint Joseph’s. The 2009 NAC Player of the Year and First Team All-NAC choice, Ostrowski capped her outstanding career with an outstanding senior campaign, leading the 14-4 Monks in goals (18), points (43) and game-winning goals (4).  She earned All-NFHCA First Team honors following her final season and closed out her career as the program’s all-time leader in goals (46), assists (39), points (131) and game-winners (9).

Co-Female Student Athlete of the Year: Christy Wezowicz - Senior, Softball

Christy Wezowicz (Granville, MA), a three-year captain for the softball team, has been on the Dean’s List following each of her seven semesters to date as a Business Management major and is a two-time GNAC All-Academic honoree. She enjoyed an excellent senior season for the Monks’ softball team, having sported a 10-3 record with a 2.35 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 77.1 innings as one of the team’s top pitchers. She played a pivotal role on a team that posted a team-record 23-game winning streak this spring and went 30-10 overall and 21-3 in GNAC play in 2010.

Male Student Athlete of the Year: Craig Woodbrey - Senior, Baseball

Craig Woodbrey (Gorham, ME) is a three-time Dean’s List honoree as a Business Management major and 2010 Monks Baseball team captain. As of May 12^th, he is hitting .358 (29-81) with 27 runs, six doubles, three homers, 22 RBI and five stolen bases and carries a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with no errors in 42 chances as the SJC center fielder.

Female Athlete of the Year: Lauren Hagerman - Senior, Soccer/Lacrosse

Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, ME) continues the tradition of outstanding two-sport female athletes at Saint Joseph’s, having played soccer and lacrosse at an All-Conference level during her four years donning the Royal Blue. She started all 20 games as a back and served as a captain for the 12-6-2 soccer team in the fall and produced a fine all-around season for the 10-4-1 lacrosse squad this spring, as she led the team in points (83), assists (29) and draw controls (55) and ranked second in goals (54) and ground balls (53). She became the first player to record 200 career points and was the second to reach 100 goals for the three-year varsity program and caps her career holding 21 game, season and career records.

Male Athlete of the Year: Will Pike - Senior, Soccer 

Will Pike (Gorham, ME), one of the best goalkeepers in SJC Men’s Soccer history, recorded a fine season between the pipes in 2009 and played a significant role in the Monks’ GNAC Championship run last fall. Pike started all 23 games for the 14-8-1 side and posted a 0.87 goals-against average with 11 shutouts and 118 saves in 2,073 minutes between the pipes to help the team make its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. For his efforts, he earned GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-GNAC and Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player honors as a senior. He led the conference in goals against average (0.87), save percentage (.860), shutouts (11), shutouts per game (.55), and saves (118) and broke many Monk single season records, including goalkeeper games (23), minutes (2073), wins (14), shutouts (11), and goals against average (0.87) in 2009 and leaves the program after two seasons owning four SJC career records and five single-season marks.

Female Newcomer of the Year: Sarah Hawkes - Freshman, Volleyball 

Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, ME) enjoyed one of the finest season posted by an SJC volleyball player in recent memory, as the 5’10” middle blocker set 12 records in her first year donning the Royal Blue. She set new single-season marks for kills (325), attack percentage (.285) and total blocks (76) and registered double-digit kills in 16 matches and at least 10 digs in 7 events last fall. For her efforts, Hawkes netted three GNAC Rookie of the Week awards and was listed on the GNAC Honor Roll three times.

Male Newcomer of the Year: Jack Lafreniere - Freshman, Soccer/Basketball/Lacrosse

Jack LaFreniere (Alton, NH) played in 37 total games as a first-year member of the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams during the 2009-10 academic year. For the soccer side, LaFreniere tallied seven goals and 17 points in 18 games and scored four goals, including two game-clinchers, in the GNAC Tournament en route to gaining All-Tournament honors for the Conference Champion Monks. He added three points in five appearances on the hard-court and registered one goal, two assists and 26 ground balls for the lacrosse team this spring.

Neile Nelson Award: Liddy van der Linden - Senior, Softball

Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) is the recipient of the 2010 Neile Nelson Award, which is presented annually to the student-athlete who has set an example by displaying a high level of commitment to team while performing a leadership role within the Saint Joseph's College campus community. The epitome of the DIII student-athlete, van der Linden showed the ability to balance academics, as a Nursing major, athletics and community service during her four years. Aside from the demands in the classroom and between the white lines, she served as a Student Ambassador and tour guide for the Admissions Department for three years and worked as a Resident Assistant for two years. Amazingly, van der Linden was able to start each of the softball team’s 159 games at shortstop in her career and posted tremendous offensive numbers while serving as a three-year team captain.  She hit .343 (170-495) with 107 runs, 36 doubles, 15 home runs, 121 RBI and 10 stolen bases in four years and ranks in the top five in five career categories. A two-time GNAC All-Academic and All-Tournament honoree and 2010 First Team All-GNAC selection, van der Linden helped lead the team to a 101-58 (.635) overall record with three GNAC Tournament appearances and two ECAC Tournament berths in her four years.

Sports Medicine Fighting Heart Award: Kody Peckham - Junior, Men's Lacrosse

Presented annually to a student athlete who has defied odds from an injury or illness, and showed perseverance, faith and dedication on the road to recovery.

Father John Tokaz Award: Erin McMann, SJC Treasurer's Office

Erin McMann of the Saint Joseph’s College Treasurer’s Office is the recipient of the 2010 Father John Tokaz Award, presented to the individual within the college community who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to the Saint Joseph's College student-athletes. Erin is known to go the extra mile for the Athletics Department and works with an understanding of how college athletics functions at times, as many requests are of the last-minute variety. An absolute pleasure to work with, Erin shows a tremendous amount of patience and flexibility and her efforts are certainly appreciated by the SJC coaches, staff members and athletes.

Royal Blue Award: Gail and Jim Nanof

Presented annually to the individual(s) outside the college community who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to the Saint Joseph's College student-athletes, Jim and Gail Nanof have been among the leaders of a great parent group during their son’s time as a member of the SJC Baseball team. Jim takes thousands of photos at the games and shares them with the SJC Baseball Community. Gail has been heavily involved in organizing the parents who feed SJC players and coaches as well as opposing teams at many home games.
