2011 Saint Joseph's College Athletics Awards

STANDISH, ME - The 2011 Saint Joseph's College Athletics Awards have been released. Eleven individual honors were given at the annual awards banquet, which was held at the Harold Alfond Center on Friday, April 29th.

Athlete of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors were awarded to both female and male athletes and several distinct accolades - The Neile Nelson, Sports Medicine Fighting Heart, Royal Blue and Father John Tokaz Awards - were alse bestowed upon deserving individuals that night. All honors were voted on by the SJC head coaches and support staff.

Prior to the awards banquet a senior reception was held to recognize the 2011 graduating class. All seniors received a yearbook, compiled by Athletics Intern Shakira LaFond '11, and a keepsake to help commemorate their time at Saint Joseph's. 2009 graduate and current men's basketball Graduate Assistant Scot Vachon offered a heartfelt presentation to the group of seniors and their parents as well.

Two four-year athletes - Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) and Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) - served as senior speakers during the awards ceremony and both spoke of their life-long memories of playing sports at Saint Joseph's. Senior Ian Lee (Hampden, ME) offered the Invocation and Mike Patrick (Wells, ME) and Christina Meehan (Nashua, NH) serves as the evening's emcees.  

The men's cross country team and the women's lacrosse team claimed honors for their achievement in the classroom as the 2010-11 Team G.P.A. Awards were also announced. A photo slideshow, created by David Bates of fotografixstudio.com, followed the athletics awards ceremony.

Co-Female Athlete of the Year: Alyssa Dunn '11 (Field Hockey & Softball)

Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) is a two-sport athlete and four-year starter for the SJC field hockey and softball teams. She is a three-time all-conference recipient in softball and has garnered all-league honors twice as a field hockey player with a pair of All-Tournament accolades in each of her sports. In four years as a two-sport standout Dunn has played in 234 contests, including 20 conference tourney tilts and seven ECAC Championship Tournament contests. As a senior defender for the field hockey team, Dunn tallied two goals, six assists and five defensive saves last fall. As the Monks starting first baseman she is currently hitting .366 (49-134) with 24 runs, nine doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI this spring. Her play this season on the diamond has helped the Monks capture the softball program’s first GNAC Championship and subsequent NCAA DIII Tournament berth.

     

Co-Female Athlete of the Year: Alyssa Marchant '11 (Lacrosse)

Alyssa Marchant (Wakefield, MA) led the Great Northeast Athletic Conference in goals per game (4.17) and shots per game (9.67) and also ranked second in points per contest (4.58) en route to claiming Conference Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-GNAC accolades this spring. As of May 2nd, Marchant’s 4.17 goals per game average ranked 18th in NCAA DIII Women’s Lacrosse. As a senior she netted 50 goals and five assists for 55 total points and added 44 ground balls, 44 draw controls and 17 caused turnovers in 12 games. She led the Monks in goals, points, shots (116), game-winners (3), free-position goals (6) and caused turnovers as a senior and is the program’s all-time leader in goals (203), points (231), shots (428), ground balls (182) and caused turnovers (56). In all, Marchant owns 25 program records, including nine career marks, and is just the second player in GNAC Women’s Lacrosse history to surpass the 200-goal plateau.

     

Female Student-Athlete of the Year: Alyssa Dunn '11 (Field Hockey & Softball)

Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME), also the 2011 SJC Co-Female Athlete of the Year, is a phenomenal two-sport athlete who has played in 236 of her teams’ 247 games while taking courses as a Pre-Medicine major at Saint Joseph’s. She is a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic honoree and has garnered a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades, two GNAC All-Academic Team honors and has been listed on the North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team on two occasions during her esteemed athletic career.

     

Female Newcomer of the Year: Mackenzie Dufour '14 (Basketball)

Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, ME) started all 27 games at point guard for the women’s basketball team and was a key contributor for a Monks’ team that went 18-9 overall and 9-3 in GNAC play last winter. She averaged 4.0 points, 4.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game and ranked second in the conference with 111 assists and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.2) as a rookie. Dufour collected Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) All-Rookie Team honors and was listed on the MWBCA Weekly Honor Roll three times. She also claimed the MWBCA Rookie of the Week award on February 7th.

     

Male Athlete of the Year: Todd Keneborus '11 (Baseball)

Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) is currently hitting .424 (56-132) with 35 runs, nine doubles, four home runs, 38 RBI and a .614 slugging percentage for the Monks baseball team. He leads the 2011 GNAC Champions in hits, runs, homers, RBI and slugging and ranks second on the team in batting and OBP (.509). The senior right fielder recently became just the fifth player in team history to record 200 career hits and ranks third all-time in slugging percentage (.635), fourth in batting average (.401) and fifth all-time in hits (204), RBI (148) and OBP (.478). For the second consecutive year, he garnered GNAC Baseball Player of the Year and First Team All-GNAC honors this spring and collected First Team All-New England as well as D3baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings All-America acclaim last spring.

     

Male Student-Athlete of the Year: Chris Petzy '12 (Basketball)

Chris Petzy (Kensington, NH), a Business Accounting major, collected Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Sportsman of the Year and All-Academic Team honors as a sophomore. He started all 28 games for the Monks Basketball team last winter and tallied 15.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest while leading the GNAC with a 45.5% (65-143) three-point field goal percentage. The team co-captain also ranked third in the GNAC with an 82.5% (99-120) success rate from the free-throw line and paced the Royal Blue with 99 free throws made during his junior campaign. Heading into his senior season he has accumulated 935 points, 234 rebounds, 87 assists and 136 three-pointers made in 315 attempts for a 43.2% success rate.

     

Male Newcomer of the Year: Kevin Richardson '14 (Golf)

Kevin Richardson (Coventry, CT) was selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Golf Rookie of the Week three times last fall and collected GNAC Rookie of the Year and All-Conference honors after finishing fourth in the conference championship in late October. He placed in the top 20 seven times and earned four top-10 efforts as a freshman and averaged 79.5 strokes in 18-hole events and 163.3 strokes in 36-hole competitions in 2010.

     

Neile Nelson Award: Megan McDevitt '12 (Basketball)

Presented annually to the student-athlete who has set an example by displaying a high level of commitment to his/her team while performing a leadership role within the Saint Joseph's College campus community.

     

Sports Medicine Fighting Heart Award: Jon Dahms '12 (Baseball)

The Sports Medicine Fighting Heart Award goes to an individual who has overcome an injury/illness to come back in his/her sport while showing dedication, heart and faith.

     

Chris Kiernan Award: Dan Achorn '12 (Baseball)

The Chris Kiernan Award is named after the college’s first Director of Athletics and men’s basketball coach who later also served as the Dean of Students and the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. This award is presented to the student-athlete who has shown a consistent work ethic to develop as both a student and an athlete; who has displayed a strong commitment toward service of team and community and has proven a “never quit attitude” and the willingness to work through and overcome adversity.

     

Father John Tokaz Award: Sports Information Director Corey McCarthy

Presented annually to the individual within the college community who has displayed extraordinary support of and assistance to the athletic department mission and to the Saint Joseph's College student-athletes.

   

Royal Blue Award: Tom & Donna Marchant

Presented annually to the individual(s) outside the college community who has displayed extraordinary support and assistance to the athletic department mission and to the Saint Joseph's College student-athletes.
