Sister Joyce Mahany served as the Director of Development at
Saint Joseph's College for 23 years, 1970-1993. During her
time at St. Joe's, she spearheaded fundraising efforts for a new
hardwood floor in the "Chamber of Horrors;" a new library,
auditorium, chapel combination, Heffernan Center; campus
beach on Sebago Lake; tennis courts; extension on the "Chamber of
Horrors" for athletic offices, locker rooms, and officials'
changing rooms; construction of the baseball and softball fields,
Msgr. Edward F. Ward Athletic Park; lights installed on both
diamonds, making Ward Park the only fully-lighted collegiate
baseball/softball complex in New England; her final contribution to
SJC athletics was her efforts in bringing about the Harold Alfond
Center.
Her fundraising not only improved the conditions for SJC athletes
of the time, but for future athletes and for coaches' recruiting
success as well. Perhaps more important is the effect she had
on the lives of those she came in contact with, many of whom were
student-athletes. As one of the most spirited fans in the
crowd, she followed all Monks teams closely, and on many occasions
traveled long distances to watch Saint Joseph's teams compete.
Sister Joyce's fundraising efforts at St. Joe's improved the
quality of SJC Athletics for decades to come, and in turn had a
direct impact on student-athlete recruitment. The long,
loving relationships she developed with student-athletes will long
be remembered.
