STANDISH, Maine - The 16th Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame Class was inducted with a ceremony at the Saint Joseph’s Dining Hall on the evening of Saturday, September 15th. Charles Warren ’88 (Basketball), Derek McIntosh ’05 (Baseball), Father John Tokaz, and the 1991-92 Women’s Basketball Team are the latest inductees into the Athletics Hall of Fame, which grows to 89 members with the 2018 class.
College President Dr. James Dlugos opened the evening with an introductory address in the Hall of Fame Room, which is located on the second floor of the Harold Alfond Center adjacent to the Athletics offices. Next was an official unveiling of the 2018 inductees’ hall of fame plaques before all attendees made their way to the Dining Hall for the remainder of the evening.
Once everyone arrived at the Dining Hall, Senior Director of Athletics Brian Curtin welcomed the crowd and Father John Tokaz provided the Invocation before dinner and dessert were served.
A two-time All-Conference honoree, Charles Warren ’88 enters the hall ranked third in team history in games (118), fifth in free throws made (387), eighth in field goal percentage (.552), 12th in rebounds (637), and 17th in points (1,287). Although his career stat line is impressive, Warren is best remembered for converting a three-point play with two seconds left to lift the Monks past Castleton, 75-74, in the 1987 District 5 Championship, a win that launched Saint Joseph’s into the NAIA National Tournament for the first time.
Warren was presented by former men’s basketball Head Coach Rick Simonds.
An outstanding catcher for the Monks’ baseball team for three seasons, Derek McIntosh ’05 hit .368 (136-370) with 99 runs, 16 doubles, 17 home runs, 95 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 116 career games. As a senior, McIntosh enjoyed one of the finest offensive seasons in SJC baseball history when he hit .453 (58-128) with 47 runs, six doubles, 10 home runs, and 41 RBI in helping lead the Monks to the 2005 North Atlantic Conference Championship.
McIntosh was presented by baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn ’86.
Father John Tokaz came to Saint Joseph’s in September of 1997 and quickly became entrenched in SJC Athletics, offering pre-game prayers and being present on the bench for all of the Monks’ teams. As an honorary member of the baseball team, Father John played a major role in changing the culture and image of the program and established a series of team retreats.
Tokaz was presented by Coach Sanborn and former baseball standout Wade Oliver ’09.
Led by Head Coach Mike McDevitt ’83, the 1991-92 Women’s Basketball Team went 23-8 (.742) overall, won the Western Maine Athletic Conference Championship, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, where the Monks recorded the first NAIA tourney win in program history, a 94-78 victory over Concordia (Neb.). The victory was also the first on the national stage for any New England NAIA women’s basketball program.
McDevitt and Sheri McCarthy ’93 presented the 1991-92 Women’s Basketball Team.
Current SJC student-athletes – Darian Berry ’19, Greg Emanuelson ’19, Jared Gagne ’19, and Kelsi McNamara ’19 - introduced each presenter at the podium.
Founded in 2000, the Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Hall of Fame honors past athletes, faculty, staff and friends who, through their actions, have brought distinction through athletics to themselves and to Saint Joseph’s College. With the combination of the committee and members who have associations with the college and/or athletics department, the Saint Joseph’s College Hall of Fame has continued to make strides toward the future while honoring the past.
