Orlando, FL - The Saint Joseph's College baseball team used a 16-hit attack and an outstanding bullpen performance to beat Daniel Webster College by a 10-5 count at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL on Tuesday night. With the win, the Monks extended their season opening win streak to five.
The offensive barrage was led by senior CF Keil Martin (Saco, ME) who was 3-3 with an RBI. Senior RF Dan Enman (Milan, NH) made his presence felt with 3-4, 2 RBI performance. First-year 1B Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, ME) went 2-2 with 3 RBI. Junior C Andrew Wood (South Portland, ME), first-year LF Craig Persechini (Middleboro, MA) and first-year 2B/P Mike Burdin (Gardiner, ME) each chipped in two hits. Junior SS Luke Enman (Milan, NH) was 2-5 with an RBI on the evening.
Andy Pooler (Southwest Harbor, ME) was dominant in relief of first-year RHP Craig Woodbrey (Gorham, ME). Pooler entered the game in the fifth inning with no outs and runners of first and second, replacing Woodbrey who left with stiffness in his shoulder. Pooler used a strikeout and a double-play ball to get out of the jam, and ended up throwing three scoreless innings including three strikeouts to earn the victory.
"Andy Pooler was huge for us tonight, we needed him to step up and he did." said Head Coach Will Sanborn. "We have continued to be aggressive at the plate and on the base-paths, and that has allowed us to be successful."
In earlier action, the Saint Joseph's College Junior Varsity team suffered a 4-2 setback to Lackawanna despite a tremendous effort from first-year RHP Brandon Wyman (Harpswell, ME). Wyman went five strong innings allowing just 3 hits and striking out 10.
The Monks have a day off on Wednesday, returning to action on Thursday when they face Vassar College and Drew University in a split doubleheader at Fest Field in Odessa, FL.
