East Providence, RI - Outstanding pitching, solid
defense, and timely hitting all added up to produce two victories
today for the Saint Joseph's College baseball team. Senior Ace
Sam Tupper (Falmouth, ME) went the distance in
game one beating Johnson & Wales by a count of 3-1. FY LHP
Kyle Dorr (South Berwick, ME) was the story in
game two allowing only one hit as he secured another 3-1 win.
In game one, Tupper (2-0) was aided by Sophomore OF Wade
Oliver (Owls Head, ME) who was 3-4 on the game with 2 RBI.
FY 1B/DH Ben Grant-Roy drove in the third SJC run,
putting up a 1-2 effort. Tupper tossed the first complete game of
the year for the Royal Blue scattering 5 hits and striking out 5
Wildcats.
Game two featured some "small ball" from the Monks, using 7
sacrifice bunts on the contest to produce their 3 runs. In the
fifth inning, Senior Keil Martin (Saco, ME) led of
the inning by reaching on an error, then FY C Travis
Adams (Saco, ME) dropped down a near perfect bunt for a
single, advancing Martin to third. With runners on the corners
Junior Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) executed a
safety squeeze scoring Martin. On the play Adams used some heady
baserunning to advance to third. Head Coach Will Sanborn was not
done, managing the offense calling on Wade Oliver to lay down
another squeeze bunt, which he executed, scoring Adams. Oliver beat
the play and wound up 2-3 on the game. Adams wound up 2-3 with a
run scored, but was equally important behind the plate.
Kyle Dorr (2-0) was simply dominant in just his
second collegiate start, holding JWU hitless through 5 2/3 innings.
Dorr wound up throwing 6 innings allowing only 1 hit and 1 run
while striking out 5. The freshman battery made quite an impression
on Sanborn. "I couldn't be more proud of the both of them (Dorr and
Adams). Kyle had a plan and worked very well, Travis made sure he
stayed on track and they did a great job, together."
With the pair of wins Saint Joseph's moves its record to 9-0. The
Monks will be in action again tomorrow in Bristol, RI taking on
Roger Williams University in a non-conference game beginning at
12:00pm.
