Monks Roll on Opening Day

Orlando, Fl. - The Saint Joseph's College baseball team (2-0) used some explosive offense and timely pitching to sweep a doubleheader to open their 2007 campaign at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The Monks rolled to a 19-2 victory over Daniel Webster College in game one and pounded out 14 hits to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson University 12-7 in game two.

Junior DH Andrew Wood opened the scoring in game one with an RBI ground rule double, plating Wade Oliver. Dustin Spiller added a two-run double in the first. The Monks lead 4-1 at the end of the first and never looked back, scoring three or more runs in five separate innings. Wood paced the offense going 3-3, with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Senior LF Keil Martin was 3-5 with 2 RBI, and freshman catcher Travis Adams was 2-2 with 2 RBI coming off the bench.

Freshman LHP Kyle Dorr was solid on the mound picking up his first collegiate win, going five innings allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7. Sophomore RHP Andy Pooler was dominant in relief, striking out three Eagles in twoscoreless innings.

The Monks' bats stayed hot in game two holding off a late rally by the FDU Devils. SJC overcame an early 1-0 deficit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Junior 2B Brian Schools led off the frame with a walk, moved to third on a double by JR Luke Enman, and scored on an RBI groundout by Wood. Enman wound up 4-5 with 2 stolen bases and scored 4 runs. Wood was again a standout, going 2-4 with a triple and an RBI, he scored 3 runs. Junior CF Dustin Spiller went 4-5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.

Senior captain Sam Tupper got the start on the mound in game two and turned in a solid performance, he went 5 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 earned runs, striking out three to earn the victory. Junior RHP David Doucette inherited a 1-out jam with runners on second and third and pitched brilliantly to protect a 7-4 lead for Tupper and SJC frosh Andrew Keirstead closed things out, throwing a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.

The Saint Joseph's College baseball team will be in action again on Monday with a doubleheader against Curry College beginning at 10:00 a.m.
