Bristol, RI - The St. Joseph's College baseball
team defeated Roger Williams University by a score of 3-2 on Sunday
afternoon in non-conference play. On a cold, windy day on the Rhode
Island coast FY LHP Andrew Keirstead (Westbrook,
ME) heated things up on the mound for the Monks, tossing a complete
game gem.
The Monks' offense plated single runs in the second, fourth, and
fifth innings highlighted by Senior 3B Mark
Clapp's (Blue Hill, ME) RBI double in the fourth, and
Junior SS Luke Enman's (Milan, NH) third home run
of the season over the left field fence in the fifth. Enman wound
up 2-5 on the day. Senior LF Keil Martin (Saco,
ME) finished the game 3-4 with a run scored.
Keirstead used just 105 pitches to shut down the Hawks' offense,
scattering 6 hits and striking out 4. Perfect through the first 3
innings, the rookie southpaw got plenty of defensive help as he
recorded 13 outs by way of the ground ball. Keirstead's effort was
the Monks second complete game in as many days (Sam Tupper vs. JWU)
and first of the nine inning variety.
By sweeping the three-game trip to the Ocean State the Royal Blue
move to 10-0, matching the best start in recent history (2001).
"This weekend we found ways to win. We didn't swing the bat
particularly well, but our pitching really gave us a chance." Said
Head Coach Will Sanborn. "Andrew Keirstead pitched great, he kept
them off balance, worked quickly, and didn't walk anybody. We
executed just enough offensively, but we aren't quite where we want
to be yet."
The Monks are off until Friday March 30th, when they travel to the
University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth for a 3:30 PM
non-conference tilt.
