North Dartmouth, MA - On Friday afternoon the Saint Joseph's
College baseball team defeated U.Mass.-Dartmouth by a count of
11-4. With the win, the Monks push their record to 11-0 which
matches the best start in the history of the program (2001).
The Royal Blue bats came alive early, plating 4 runs in the first
inning, highlighted by JR SS Luke Enman (Milan,
NH) and JR CF Dustin Spiller (Gorham, ME) RBI's.
FY 1B Ben Grant-Roy capped the scoring in the
opening frame with a 2 RBI double. Spiller finished the day
totaling 3 RBI and Enman crossed the plate 3 times. JR C
Andrew Wood (South Portland, ME) finished 2-3 with
an RBI and JR captain Brian Schools was 2-4 with a
run scored.
On the mound for the Monks, SR LHP Ben Cutter
(Westbrook, ME) delivered his finest outing of the young season,
going 6 innings allowing only 4 hits and striking out 4 Corsairs.
Cutter (2-0) did not allow a base on balls. He was relieved in the
seventh by sophomore Chris Leger (Jaffrey, NH)
before JR David Doucette (Ipswich, MA) closed out
the game.
On the day, the potent Monks' offense pounded out 15 hits and took
advantage of 4 U.Mass.-Dartmouth miscues to reach the 11-run mark.
"We swung the bats well, especially early on," said Head Coach Will
Sanborn. "Ben Cutter did exactly what we needed him to do on the
mound and we made plays defensively." Sanborn downplayed the
significance of the team tying the program record for consecutive
wins to begin a campaign (11). "I am happy that we have reached
this point but we haven't accomplished anything yet. We still need
to improve in certain areas; we still need to work hard. We have
two more important games this weekend, that's what we are focused
on."
On Sunday, the Monks will look to set the mark against
non-conference foe Plymouth State University. The home opener will
be a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at beautiful Larry Mahaney
Diamond.
