Monks Split with Falcons

STANDISH, ME - The Monks (15-11, 5-5 GNAC) hosted GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus College (5-16, 3-3 GNAC) on Sunday and lost the first game 6-2, but rebounded with a 8-2 victory in the nightcap game to salvage a split. JR Wade Oliver (Owls Head, ME) and SR Luke Enman (Milan, NH) both hit home runs in the second game and starting pitcher SO Andrew Keirstead (Westbrook, ME) allowed 8 hits and 2 earned runs to collect the victory and improve his record to 4-1 on the season.

GAME ONE

The Falcons scored 3 runs off of 4 hits and 2 SJC errors in the first inning to stake an early lead. SO Matt Rondinone (East Hartford, CT) and SO Erik Suraci (West Haven, CT) both registered RBI singles in the inning.

After the Monks failed to score in their half of the first, the Falcons added another run with a SR Steve Carosella (Waterbury, CT) single to extend their lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, FY Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME) singled home SR Dustin Spiller (Gorham, ME), who reached on a base on balls, to make the score 4-1, Albertus Magnus.

Wade Oliver led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a Spiller double with two outs to lessen the AMC lead to 4-2.

St. Joe's was unable to muster more offense in the team's last four trips to the plate and the Falcons added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth off a SR J.R. Bagley (Middletown, CT) double to provide Albertus Magnus with a 6-2 conference victory.

For the Falcons, Steve Carosella was 3-3 with a run and an RBI, Erik Suraci went 3-4 with an RBI and starting pitcher J.R. Bagley was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI's. Bagley pitched 6.1 innings to get the win and allowed just 6 SJC hits.

Starting pitcher SO Pat Moran (Winterport, ME) takes the loss for the Monks after allowing 12 hits but only two earned runs. SR Steve Stout (Gloucester, MA) whiffed two batters in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

GAME TWO

The Monks came out in game two with a vengeance to score runs in each of the first five innings. Wade Oliver set the tone for the Royal Blue with a leadoff home run, the first of his career, that squeaked over the left field fence and gave his team an early 1-0 advantage.

St. Joe's tacked on two runs in the second inning off of two hits and two AMC miscues. SR Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) sent home FY Ian Lee (Hampden, ME), who led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield, and Oliver scored on an error by the AMC first baseman to give the Monks a 3-0 lead.

FY Eric LaBatte (Rochester, ME) registered a two-out RBI with a single in the 3rd inning that drove home Pat Moran to provide the Monks with a 4-0 edge over the Falcons.

Albertus Magnus put a run on the board in the fourth to lessen the SJC lead to 4-1. SR Jeff King (New Haven, CT) doubled to start the inning and JR Chris Noske (South Windsor, CT) sent him home with a single.

St. Joe's took a 7-1 lead after they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth off of four hits. Ian Lee sent home two runs with a single and SR Andrew Wood (South Portland, ME) registered an RBI with a fielder's choice that scored Pat Moran, who singled to reach base.

Senior slugger Luke Enman hit a line-drive home run off the right field foul pole, a solo blast, to give the Monks an 8-1 lead in the fifth inning. The Falcons tacked on a run in the top of the sixth on a Noske sacrifice fly to make the final score 8-2, Monks.

SJC starting pitcher Andrew Keirstead tossed a complete game gem, allowing 8 hits, 2 earned runs and no walks in the win.

For the Monks, Eric LaBatte was 3-4 with an RBI, Ian Lee went 2-3 with a run and 2 RBI's, Pat Moran was 2-3 with 2 runs and Luke Enman was 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI.

For the Falcons, Steve Carosella was 2-3 and Jeff King was 2-3 with 2 runs. Starting pitcher JR Dan Doria (West Haven, CT) was hit with the loss.
