STANDISH, ME - Senior Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) hit a two-out single in the
bottom of the 10th with bases loaded to drive in two runs and lift
the Monks (26-14) past nationally ranked #16 Keene State (26-8),
5-4. Spiller was 3-5 in the game and JR
Wade Oliver (Owls Head, ME) went
2-4 with an RBI in the important in-region victory. Starter SO
Kyle Dorr (Berwick, ME) worked 6
innings, allowed one earned run while striking out five. SO
Chris Nanof (Clinton, MA) earned
his first collegiate win in relief. Keene closer SR Greg Ford
(Nashua, NH) takes the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season.
JR Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, NH) led off the game for the Owls with
a triple and scored on a JR Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, NH) sac fly
to right field to provide Keene with a 1-0 lead.
Spiller opened the bottom of the second with a
single and JR Ian Lee (Hampden,
ME) followed with a base on balls. Both runners advanced on a SO
Ricky Sarmento (Lowell, MA)
sacrifice bunt. SR Andrew Wood
(South Portland, ME) hit a ball to deep short that would score
Spiller, but KSC shortstop SR Ryan Jones (Nashua,
NH) threw the ball away to allow Lee to score all
the way from second base and send Wood to second.
Oliver plated the third run of the inning with a
single over the first baseman's head to score Wood
and give the Monks a 3-1 advantage.
The two-run SJC cushion stood until the top of the eighth when Ryan
Jones made up for his miscue with a triple that scored two runs and
knot the game at three apiece.
After a scoreless ninth inning, the Owls went on to take a 4-3 lead
when pinch runner SO Mike Burgoyne (Medford, MA) scored from third
on a passed ball in the 10th frame.
The table was set for late-game heroics as Oliver laced a one-out
double to the left-center gap with one out and both SR
Luke Enman (Milan, NH) and SR
Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) drew
walks to load the bases. Keene closer Greg Ford managed to strike
out SO Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford,
ME) to record the second out of the inning. With a 2-2 count,
Spiller sharply hit a ball up the middle for a
single that scored Oliver from third to tie the
game. Head Coach Will Sanborn
wisely waved Schools home as KSC second baseman JR
Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, NH) managed to knock the ball down on the
outfield grass, but his throw was just late as Schools slid in
safely to give the Monks a dramatic 5-4 victory.
Kyle Dorr continued his pitching
hot streak, as he has allowed just one earned run over his last
16.1 innings pitched to lower his ERA to 3.86 for the season.
After Dorr's impressive start, SO
Chris Dion (Lawrence, MA), JR
Andrew Pooler (Somesville, ME),
SR Steve Stout (Gloucester, MA)
and Nanof all pitched effectively in relief for
the Monks. The pitching effort is especially impressive since Keene
was sporting a .372 team batting average, sixth-best in NCAA
Division III Baseball.
For the Owls, FY John Barber (Brattleboro, VT) was 4-5 with a run
and Ryan Jones was 3-5 with a triple and two RBI's in the loss.
The Monks will travel to Amherst College (MA) on Saturday May 3rd
for a doubleheader (1-7, 1-9) against the Lord Jeffs. The first
game is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
