HARWICH, MA - St. Joe's (28-18) lost their final game of the
season to Worcester State (24-17) in the 2nd round of the NCAA
Regional Tournament. JR Stephan
Gorsun (South Berwick, ME) and FR
Todd Keneborus (Hollis, ME) both
each had an RBI in the losing effort. In their final games at
St. Joe's, senior Andrew Wood
(South Portland, ME) added two hits and scored a run while senior
captain Dustin Spiller (Gorham,
ME) went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI.
Matt Hart led off the top of the first for Worcester State with a
double to right center field. After an out and an error, Nate
Nelson blasted a home run over the left field fence to put the
Lancers up, 3-0. Later in the inning Worcester State loaded the
bases for Ryan LaPrade, who drilled a grand slam over the left
field fence. Hart, batting for the second time in the inning, hit
the Lancers' third homer of the inning down the left field line.
Saint Joe's starting pitching only lasted 2/3 of an inning and the
damage had already been done, with Worcester State ahead, 8-0.
The teams exchanged runs over the next four innings, before LaPrade
came up leading off for the Lancers in the sixth. He hit his second
round-tripper of the day, again to left field. Following a Hart
double and two outs, Nelson stepped in and crushed his second home
run of the game to the deepest part of the field - a knock of over
400 feet. Worcester State led, 12-1. SR Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME) scored on a
Spiller double in the third inning to account for
the SJC run.
What little offense the Monks were able to put together came mostly
in the bottom of the eighth. Saint Joseph's squeezed four hits out
of Worcester State relievers, and coupled with an error and a
fielders choice, were able to get three runs across the plate.
Spiller, SO Travis
Adams (Saco, ME), Wood and SO
Ricky Sarmento (Lowell, MA)
recorded hits in the inning for St. Joe's
Worcester State's Hart went 3-for-6 in the game, and scored four
times. Nelson and LaPrade combined to hit 5-for-10, while
accounting for 12 of the team's 14 RBI. Starter Craig McBride
pitched seven strong innings of work, giving up six hits and two
free passes as he struck out six.
SO Pat Moran (Winterport, ME)
takes the loss on the mound for the Monks to fall to 4-5 on the
season. FY Chris Dion (Lawrence,
MA), SR Steve Stout (Gloucester,
MA) JR Andrew Pooler (Somesville,
ME) and SR David Doucette
(Ipswich, MA) combined to allow nine earned runs in 8.1 innings of
relief.
