STANDISH, ME - The St. Joe's baseball program held its annual
awards banquet at the Woodlands Country Club in Falmouth on Monday,
May 12. Head Coach Will Sanborn presented team awards to eight
individuals.
Athletic Fields Manager Jason
Chisholm was presented the Father John Tokaz
Alumni Recognition Award. Chisholm takes great pride in maintaining
immaculate athletic playing fields at St. Joe's, and this certainly
is evident when one watches a baseball game at Larry Mahaney
Diamond. He has earned a place in the Monks baseball family, as the
players and coaches are well aware of his efforts on the baseball
diamond. Father John Tokaz served as the college chaplain for nine
years and, during his time at St. Joe's, impacted the lives of many
Monks baseball players with his tireless dedication to the
education and character development of these young men.
Junior Stephan Gorsun (South
Berwick, ME/Marshwood HS) is the 2008 Coaches' Award recipient.
Gorsun, a swift baserunner, has served the role of pinch-runner for
three years under Coach Sanborn. He possesses a tremendous work
ethic on and off the field and is one of the top students on the
team as a Marketing Major.
The outstanding defensive play of the 2008 Gold Glove Award
recipient provided reason for the inception of a new honor, as this
award has never before been given by Coach Sanborn. Junior
rightfielder Wade Oliver (Owls
Head, ME/Rockland HS) seems to catch everything hit in the air on
the right side of the field, with many plays being highlight-reel
quality. The junior was named to the All-Conference First Team and
All-Tournament Team in 2008.
Freshman catcher Ian Lee
(Hampden, ME/Hampden Academy) was named as the 2008 Rookie of the
Year. Lee, also the '08 GNAC Rookie of the Year and an
All-Conference Second Team honoree, hit .341 with three home runs
and 33 RBI's in his first year at St. Joe's.
The 2008 Pitcher of the Year award goes to junior lefthander
Andrew Keirstead (Westbrook,
ME/Bridgton Academy). The crafty southpaw was named as the '08 GNAC
Tournament Most Valuable Player after pitching in three games for
the Monks in the tourney. Keirstead tied for the team-lead with six
victories and led the team with 68.2 innings and 15
appearances.
Senior tri-captain David Doucette
(Ipswich, MA/Ipswich HS) is the 2008 Robert R. Doyle Award
recipient. The award, named in loving memory of former Monks
pitching coach "Bobby" Doyle, is presented annually to the team
member who best-embodies Coach Doyle's spirit, dedication and love
for the game of baseball. Doucette displayed great leadership
qualities as a senior captain as well as a high level of integrity
on and off the baseball diamond in his four years wearing a Monks
uniform.
Senior tri-captain Brian Schools
(Gorham, ME/Gorham HS) was named as the 2008 Most Dedicated Player.
Schools, a four-year starter in the infield and two-year captain
for Coach Sanborn, admirably juggled his studies, an internship, a
job working on the SJC athletic fields with Jason Chisholm all
while tending to a demanding baseball practice and game schedule.
Schools had an excellent final season with a .304 (45-148) batting
average, 36 runs and 8 stolen bases.
For the second consecutive season, the Most Valuable Player Award
goes to senior Luke Enman (Milan,
NH/Berlin HS). During the 2008 season the senior slugger led the
Monks with a .368 (56-142) batting average and a .678 slugging
percentage and finished tied for the lead with 56 hits, 7 home runs
and 41 RBI's. For his play this season Enman was named the 2008
GNAC Player of the Year and was listed on the GNAC All-Conference
First Team. He was also named as the 2008 Saint Joseph's College
Male Athlete of the Year.
Enman certainly left his mark in the St. Joe's baseball record
books. In his four seasons he accumulated 601 at-bats (1st
all-time), 159 runs (3rd), 214 hits (tied 2nd), 42 doubles (2nd),
18 triples (1st), 29 home runs (tied 3rd), 162 RBI's (3rd), 90
walks (2nd), 38 stolen bases (tied 5th) and a .356 career batting
average (tied 8th). Also, his seven triples hit during the 2008
season is the SJC single-season record.
Enman will be representing Saint Joseph's College in the New
England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game at
Fenway Park on Saturday, June 14th. The game is scheduled to begin
at 12:00 PM.
The '08 SJC baseball team finished the season with an 8-6
conference and 28-18 overall record. In their first season in the
conference, the Monks won a GNAC Championship and advanced to the
NCAA Division III Regionals in Harwich, MA for the third
consecutive season.
