BRUNSWICK, ME - Brendan Garner's two-run single in the bottom of
the
seventh inning lifted the Bowdoin College baseball team to a
7-5
non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday
afternoon at
Pickard Field. The Polar Bears (13-12) defeat their rivals from
Standish
for the first time since 2004, snapping a five-game winless
streak
(0-4-1) against the Monks (14-8).
Bowdoin's game-winning rally started when Jon Koperniak was hit by
a
pitch. After consecutive singles by Dan Hicks and Brett Gorman,
Garner
laced a single to center that put the Polar Bears ahead for good.
The
rally completed a comeback for the Polar Bears, who scored twice in
the
sixth on an error to tie the game at five.
Bowdoin held a 3-0 after the first two innings but saw St. Joseph's
take
advantage of a wild pitch and error to score four unearned runs.
The big
blow came on a two-run double by Ian
Lee. Travis
Adams collected a pair
of hits to the lead the Saint Joseph's attack.
Mason Roberge took the loss
in relief, allowing a pair of runs in 1.1 innings.
Sam Murray started
and went 5.0 innings for the Monks, allowing two earned runs.
The Polar Bear offense was led by three hits from Reid Auger while
Hicks
had two hits and two runs scored. Joe Pace started and tossed
three
one-hit innings for Bowdoin. Sean Kleier pitched a perfect inning
in
relief while Eric Chenelle took the victory after going one
scoreless
inning. Tim Welch closed out the eighth and ninth frames to earn
the save.
