JERSEY CITY, NJ - New Jersey City University (8-10-1) defeated
Saint Joseph's (6-6), 3-0, in the last of a three-game set on
Sunday afternoon. Ian Lee '11
(Hampden, ME) went 3-4 and starter Sam
Murray '12 (Walpole, MA), who fanned two and
allowed seven hits and two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, suffered
his first loss of the season. The Monks, unable to come up with the
big hit, had a runner in scoring position in seven of the nine
innings and stranded 10 runners in the loss, which snapped a
43-game streak in which St. Joe's had not been shut out.
Gothic Knights starter Jeff Karczewski '11 (Hamilton, NJ) struck
out eight while allowing five hits and one walk in seven innings to
improve to 2-2 on the year. Relievers Steve Hallam '09 (Harrison,
NJ) and Joseph Tarallo '10 (South Amboy, NJ) each tossed a
scoreless inning to close out the game for the victors.
The hosts sent a pair of runs across the plate in the second inning
off Murray with the help of three hits and one SJC
miscue. Tom Burke '09 (Edison, NJ) led off the inning by slapping a
double down the right field line and was promptly sent home when
Joe Steinberger '12 (San Diego, CA) followed with a single to left
center. The freshman first baseman scored two batters later when
Kristopher Brus '09 (Parlin, NJ) hit a sac fly to center, giving
his outfit a 2-0 lead.
NJCU second sacker Jorge Pardo '09 (West New York, NJ) doubled to
left with one out in the fifth and scored on a Mark Hoyer '09
(Irvine, CA) sac fly to center to cap the game scoring.
Monks relievers Kevin Chamberlain
'11 (Scarborough, ME) and Kyle Dorr '10 (Berwick, ME) combined to
throw 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four whiffs and just one hit
allowed. Lee, Wade
Oliver '09 (Owls Head, ME) and
Todd Keneborus '11 (Hollis
Center, ME/Cheverus) all recorded doubles in the loss.
After allowing 29 walks in the first six games, spanning 46
innings, the Saint Joseph's pitching staff has issued just five
free passes in the last six contests over 47 frames. Consequently,
the staff ERA has dropped nearly three runs per game.
Steinberger went 3-4 with a run and an RBI and was the only Gothic
Knights player to notch multiple hits.
Saint Joseph's will travel to New Haven, CT on Saturday to take on
Albertus Magnus College in the GNAC opener for both teams. The
first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM.
