Monks Thrash Eagles, 8-2 and 11-1

BANGOR, ME – Saint Joseph’s (11-7, 3-1 GNAC) took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Husson University (11-12) with 8-2 and 11-1 victories at Winkin Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

St. Joe’s played well in all facets of the game, as the Monks offense put up 19 runs off 19 hits, the defense made two errors, and six members of the SJC pitching staff combined to allow just three runs and nine hits in 14 innings.

Left-hander Kyle Dorr ’10 (Berwick, ME) picked up the victory for the Monks in the opener after tossing five innings with four K’s and three hits allowed. Left fielder Todd Keneborus ’11 (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) staked the Royal Blue to an early 2-0 lead with a two-run blast far beyond the left field fence in the first inning and drove in four in the 8-2 triumph.

Game-two starter Chad Rafferty ’13 (Keene, NH) was the beneficiary of a Monks offense that exploded with 11 runs in the first and second innings in the nightcap contest. The freshman starter didn’t require the surplus of run support, however, as he allowed just four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in five innings en route to collecting the victory on the hill. Designated hitter Pat Moran ’10 (Winterport, ME) hit a grand slam in the first frame and knocked in six overall and center fielder Craig Woodbrey ’10 (Gorham, ME) connected for his first career tater, a three-run big fly in the second inning, in the 11-1 win.

GAME ONE

The Keneborus long ball accounted for the Monks’ pair of runs in the first frame and the Royal Blue went on to tack on three more off four hits in the second inning. Second baseman Mike Burdin ’10 (Gardiner, ME) plated catcher Travis Adams ’10 (Saco, ME) with a triple to right center and scored on a bunt by center fielder Nate Martin ’13 (Chebeague Island, ME). Shortstop Chris Campbell ’11 (Rochester, NH) reached with an infield single and was driven home by Keneborus, who laced a single up the middle to make it a 5-0 game.

The Monks added two runs in the fourth inning off an RBI single by Keneborus and a sac fly by first baseman Ben Grant-Roy ’10 (Biddeford, ME). A sac fly by Campbell plated another in the sixth.

Husson shortstop Ethan Guerrette ’11 (Wales, ME) led off the fourth inning with a double and scored when the next batter, first baseman Chris Maguire ’11 (Bucksport, ME) singled to right. The Eagles notched their second run of the game when right fielder Shawn Smith ’13 (Winterport, ME) drove home Maguire with a groundout to short.

For the Monks, Keneborus was 3-4 with four RBI, Campbell went 2-2 with three runs and an RBI, Adams was 2-3 with two runs and Burdin went 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Mason Roberge ’11 (Franklin, NH) hurled a perfect sixth inning and Chris Nanof ’10 (Clinton, MA) allowed two hits and a run in the seventh inning.

For the Eagles, Maguire was 2-3 with a run and an RBI and starting pitcher Ryan Walker ’11 (Hollis, ME) took the loss after allowing seven runs and seven hits in 3.1 innings.

GAME TWO

Campbell led off game two with a sharply hit single to center and scored when Husson starter Bill Doherty ’13 (Scituate, MA) walked three consecutive batters. After the final walk was issued to Grant-Roy, Moran stepped up to the plate and sent an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to provide the Monks with a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Grant-Roy registered an RBI single and Moran drove home a pair with a base knock to right before Woodbrey tattooed his first NCAA home run, a three-run jack to right, to give the visitors a commanding 11-0 cushion after two innings.

The Eagles scored their lone run when Guerrette, who tripled to lead off the frame, scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of third baseman Jake Arthers ’12 (Belfast, ME) in the fifth.

For the Monks, Moran was 2-4 with two runs and six RBI, Burdin went 2-2 with two runs scored, and Campbell was 2-4 with two runs. Freshmen relievers Adam Stanclift (Chesterfield, NH) and Tyler Laverriere (Biddeford, ME) both tossed scoreless frames to close out the game.

Husson notched four hits with no repeat hitters in the losing effort. Doherty was hit with the losing decision after allowing nine runs and six hits in 1.2 innings.

St. Joe’s will play two against University of Maine-Farmington at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Friday at 2:00 PM. Husson returns to action on Friday at home against Thomas College at 1:00 PM.
