Errors Costly in 7-5 Loss to New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, NJ – New Jersey City University (7-7) defeated Saint Joseph's (11-2), 7-5, in a non-conference baseball contest on Sunday morning. Freshman catcher Nic Lops (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus) went 2-4 with three RBI in the losing effort.

The game stood at a scoreless stalemate through five complete innings but St. Joe's broke through with four runs off four hits as Lops and junior Mike Pratt (Dartmouth, Mass.) knocked home two apiece in the top of the sixth. The lead would not last however, as the Monks committed seven errors – including four in the last three frames – allowing the Gothic Knights to claim the victory.

Lops was the Monks' lone repeat hitter while Pratt went 1-3 with a run, a double and a pair of RBI in the closing contest of the three-game set with NJCU. Saint Joseph's employed seven pitchers, including starter Lincoln Sanborn (Standish, Maine), who fanned four batters in three perfect innings, and Chris Bryant (Gray, Maine), who suffered the loss after allowing a run-scoring single to the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth.

The Gothic Knights also featured just one repeat hitter – Andrew Rivera (Edison, N.J.), who went 3-5 with a run, a triple and four RBI on the day. Reliever Kevin DeMauro (Kearny, N.J.) earned the victory after yielding a hit and two hit batsmen with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.

With the result, Saint Joseph's falls to 9-2 in the history of the series with New Jersey City University. For the Monks, the seven errors ranks as the most the team has committed since making the same number of miscues versus Lyndon State College on April 27th, 2002. St. Joe's set the team single-game fielding futility record with nine miscues in a 10-0 loss to Bowdoin College on April 14th, 1985.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday when the club hosts 2010 New England Regional Champion UMass.-Boston in a single nine-inning game slated to begin at 3:30 PM.
