Lynchburg Topples Saint Joseph’s, 11-0

ATLANTA, Ga. – Saint Joseph's College (0-2) suffered an 11-0 loss at the hands of Lynchburg College (1-5) at Emory College on Sunday morning. Sophomore third baseman Brett Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) was 2-3 in the losing effort.

For the second time in as many games the Monks had trouble getting the bats going, as the Royal Blue mustered only two hits – a pair of singles by Barbati – in the loss. Playing in unseasonably cold weather – game time temperature was recorded as just 30 degrees – Lynchburg, a program based in Virginia that had played five games prior to this morning, fared much better at the plate with 14 hits, including three doubles, in 38 at bats.

Senior starter Alex Valenti (Lawrence, Mass.) took the loss but deserved a better fate after allowing four runs (three earned) off six hits and a pair of walks with four K's in 5.2 innings. Junior Riley Cox (Westford, Mass.), sophomore Matt Wojciak (Merrimack, N.H.), sophomore Thomas Fortier (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman Steven Albert (Worcester, Mass.) also took turns on the hill and combined to allow seven runs off eight hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 2.1 innings.

Saint Joseph's closes out the three-game Georgia trip with a 10:00 AM contest versus Emory College, a team that finished the 2014 season as the NCAA DIII World Series runner-up and is currently ranked second nationally.
