STANDISH, Maine – The second NCAA DIII Baseball Regional Rankings have been released and Saint Joseph's College is fifth in the New England Region.
Saint Joseph's, 24-15 overall through May 2nd, suffered losses to Suffolk and Johnson & Wales in the Great Northeast Athletic (GNAC) Tournament at Holman Stadium last Saturday and failed to claim the GNAC title for the first time since 2009 in the process. With the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament qualifier going to 2015 GNAC Champion Suffolk, the Monks are forced to wait until the 2015 NCAA DIII Baseball Tournament field is announced on Monday, May 11th to learn if they are one of 14 teams from across the country to earn an at-large, or Pool C, berth.
The NCAA Regional Ranking Committee considers a myriad of components, including Win-loss percentage against Division III opponents, strength-of-schedule, Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OWP), and Opponents' Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OOWP). With their NCAA Tournament fate on the line, the Monks have four important in-region games remaining, with Bowdoin College (5/3), Bates College (5/5, DH) and MIT (5/7) all coming to Larry Mahaney Diamond over the next five days. Bates has clinched a NESCAC Tournament berth for the second-consecutive season while MIT, which bounced St. Joe's from the NCAA Regional last spring, is facing Wheaton College in the NEWMAC Championship later today. While positive results in the four remaining games does not ensure the Monks' sixth-consecutive NCAA tourney appearance, the team's upcoming performance - along with victories over Southern Maine, Endicott and Wheaton earlier this season - will certainly help.
