BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-2) defeated Husson University (6-6), 3-2 in 10 innings, in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks scored single runs in the second and third innings and the Eagles knotted the game with two runs off three hits in the bottom of the third. Three SJC pitchers held Husson to just one hit over the next five frames, an effort that allowed the Royal Blue to punch through with a run off two hits in the top of the 10th.
Senior Dan Donovan (Lynn, Mass.) pinch hit to lead off the 10th and promptly delivered a double to center field. Freshman Dawson Renaud (East Waterboro, Maine) replaced Donovan as a pinch runner at second base and scored almost immediately when the following batter, sophomore outfielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.), roped a double to the right-center gap.
ON THE MOUND:
Freshman starter Matt Demma (Worcester, Mass.), making his first appearance since March 11th, did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs off four hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Junior Philip LeVangie (Hanover, Mass.) fanned three batters and gave up one hit in 3.1 innings of outstanding relief and junior Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) tossed two no-hit frames with a pair of punch outs. Junior southpaw Josh Partridge (Deering, N.H.) yielded two hits with two K's in two innings to pick up his second victory of the year.
Husson starter Ben Walls was outstanding, but was hit with the no-decision after allowing two runs off eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in nine innings. AJ Purcell took the loss after giving up a run off two hits while not registering an out and Jacob Gauvin stopped the bleeding with a perfect 1-2-3 inning of work.
OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Sophomore second baseman Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) was 2-4 with a run and a walk
- Senior shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) went 2-4 with a sac bunt
- Junior catcher Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) was 2-5 with an RBI
- Donovan, Gagne, and senior designated hitter Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.) registered doubles
OFF THE BAT – HUSSON:
- Third baseman Ryan Rebar went 2-5 with a double
- Center fielder Christian Corneil tripled and drove in a run
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 64-36 in the history of the series with Husson University. The Monks have now defeated the Eagles in three-consecutive meetings.
