PROVIDENCE, RI – Each time the Johnson & Wales University baseball team fought back against visiting Saint Joseph's College, the Monks had an answer. SJC got the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of game one then used a six-run fifth inning to sweep the doubleheader with scores of 7-5 and 10-2.

Of Note:

A two-run single by SJC's Taylor Black broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the sixth inning of the opener. Josh Partridge worked the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth victory. JWU reliever Kyle Cutler (East Hampton, Conn.) was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 0-2.

Mistakes by the Wildcats allowed the Monks to get three of their first five runs. Jameson Collins scored the second of three runs in the first inning on a balk. A wild pitch plated Brett Barbati in the fourth and an error in the fifth scored St. Joseph's fifth run.

Johnson & Wales did all of its damage with two outs in the fifth. An error on a grounder that would have been the final out allowed Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) to score. Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) followed with a two-run double then Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) cleared the bases with the first home run of his career. 

Noah McDaniel drove in two of his three runs on a two-run single in the first inning of game two. After the Monks took a 3-0 lead in the third, the Wildcats responded with a pair of runs. Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) ripped an RBI double and Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI) followed with a RBI single.

A JWU fielding error prolonged the fifth inning and Chris Gerossie capitalized as he belted a three-run home run, his first of the season, to open up a 7-2 lead. Taking the loss was Lane Compton (Freeland, Mich.) as he surrendered nine runs, five earned, on nine hits. Nick Malatesta came on in the fourth to throw three-shutout innings and get his first win of the year.

Both teams are back in action Monday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Husson University (4:00 PM) and the Wildcats travel to Becker College (4:00 PM).
