Clutch Hitting, Great Pitching Propels Monks Past Gulls

BEVERLY, Mass. - #20/21 Saint Joseph's College (18-2, 4-0 GNAC) used timely hitting and excellent pitching to defeat Endicott College (11-11, 4-4 CCC), 3-1, in a non-conference baseball contest on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Endicott struck first, as junior left fielder Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) led off the bottom of the first with a single to right and scored all the way from first when the following batter, sophomore first baseman Craig Seidl (Dracut, Mass.), doubled. Saint Joseph's, ranked 20th nationally in the recent ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll and 21st in the D3Baseball.com/NCBWA poll, was held off the board until senior designated hitter Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.) led off the top of the fourth with an opposite field home run.

The Monks broke the 1-1 tie with two runs off two hits in the seventh, when senior second baseman Nick Petchell (Milton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a pinch-hit double off the bat of senior Dan Donovan (Lynn, Mass.). Senior Scott Betts (Peabody, Mass.), who entered as a pinch-runner for Donovan, moved to third on a Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) single and crossed the plate on a Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) infield groundout.
