STANDISH, Maine - #19/24 Saint Joseph's College (22-4) cruised past Endicott College (14-13), 11-1, in non-conference baseball action at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Monks took command of the contest by scoring five runs off one hit and two Endicott errors. Two innings later, Saint Joseph's plated six runs off two hits and one Gulls miscue to account for the 11-1 final.
During the six-run fifth, senior second baseman Nick Petchell (Milton, Mass.) and junior center fielder Chris Gerossie (Chester, N.H.) registered an RBI apiece after being hit by pitches with the bases loaded and senior right fielder Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, Maine) doubled in a run and later scored on a Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) base hit.
ON THE MOUND:
Saint Joseph's junior starter Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) allowed one run off three hits and two walks with one strikeout in 4.2 innings before being lifted in favor of classmate Philip LeVangie (Hanover, Mass.), who tossed 2.1 shutdown innings with five punch outs to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the year. Senior Nick Malatesta (Wrentham, Mass.) tossed a perfect eighth inning and freshman Weston Bergeron (Lyman, Maine), making his collegiate debut, fanned one in the ninth.
Endicott starter Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) falls to 2-3 on the year after giving up five runs (one earned) off two hits, a walk, and three hit batsmen in four innings. Relievers Chris O'Brien (Trumbull, Conn.), Kyle Wollman (East Berlin, Conn.), and Alexander Mandrus (Acton, Mass.) combined to allow six runs (five earned) off two hits, three walks, and two hit batters in an inning of work and graduate Corbin Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) shut the door with three innings of one-hit relief while striking out seven of the 10 batters he faced.
OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Sophomore first baseman Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and was the only repeat-hitter for either team
- Meehan was 1-3 with two runs, a double, and an RBI
- Junior catcher Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) doubled and scored a run
- Sophomore shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) scored twice and drove in a run
- Blacks' RBI single in the bottom of the fifth was the 150th hit of his career
OFF THE BAT – ENDICOTT:
- Junior left fielder Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.), graduate first baseman Anthony Serina (Portsmouth, R.I.), and senior center fielder Cam Farnham (Andover, Mass.) accounted for the Gulls' three hits, all singles
- Senior shortstop Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) knocked in the Gulls' run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's is now 15-6 in the history of the series with Endicott College. Today's winning margin over the Gulls is the most since the Monks defeated their New England Region counterpart by an 18-8 score on April 2nd, 2000.
