STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (13-5) toppled Husson University (5-9), 11-1, in a non-conference baseball contest at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Thursday afternoon. The Monks extended their winning streak to 10 games with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Husson grabbed the lead by scoring a run without a hit in the top of the first, when junior third baseman Sam Huston (Bangor, Maine) plated sophomore shortstop Nick Guerrette (Hermon, Maine) with a sac fly in the top of the first.
The visitors' lead did not last long however, as the Monks scored twice in the bottom of the first, with sophomore Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) notching an RBI single and junior Greg Emanuelson (Hudson, N.H.) working a bases-loaded walk to secure a 2-1 lead.
St. Joe's essentially put the game out of reach with four runs off six hits in the bottom of the second, when Gravel and junior Anthony DiPrizio (Rochester, N.H.) registered RBI's and senior center fielder Chris Gerossie (Chester, N.H.) knocked in a pair with a bases-loaded single through the left side.
DiPrizio added another RBI in the third and Emanuelson lofted a sac fly in the fourth to lift the Monks to an 8-1 lead. Gagne and DiPrizio posted run-scoring doubles in the fifth and freshman Brendan Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) registered an RBI single – his first collegiate hit - in the sixth to account for the 11-1 final.
Four SJC pitchers managed to hold the Eagles to just three hits and went six innings without yielding a hit, as junior Nick Whitten (South Portland, Maine) led off the second with a single and provided the visitors with their second hit of the day when he singled with two out in the top of the eighth.
ON THE MOUND – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Senior starter Travis Godbout (Portland, Maine) allowed a run off one hit and four walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings
- Sophomore Matt Demma (Worcester, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season after fanning three batters in two shutout innings of relief
- Sophomore Weston Bergeron (Lyman, Maine) allowed a hit and a walk with two K's in 1.1 innings
- Freshman Kristian Harris (Salem, N.H.) yielded a hit in a scoreless inning of relief
ON THE MOUND – HUSSON:
- Junior starter Justin Allender (Rockland, Maine) took the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) off eight hits and three walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings
- Freshman Ben Bernier (Minot, Maine) allowed four runs off six hits with one punch-out in 3.1 innings
- Junior AJ Purcell (Tiverton, R.I.) allowed a run off four walks in 0.2 innings
- Junior Kyle Bourget (Lisbon, Maine), freshman Nolan Dousa (Mansfield, Mass.), and junior Dustin Smith (Lincoln, Maine) combined to work 2.1 innings of scoreless relief
OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior left fielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) was 4-4 with three runs, a double, three steals, and an RBI
- Junior shortstop Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) went 2-4 with two runs and a stolen base
- Gerossie added two hits, a run, a double, a stolen base, and two RBI
OFF THE BAT – HUSSON:
- Whitten was 2-4 and was the lone repeat hitter for the Eagles
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
The Monks are now 71-50 in the history of the series with Husson University and have defeated the Eagles in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2016 season.
