Year: 1st Season

Alex Markakis ’14 was hired as an assistant coach during the fall of 2014.

Markakis, who transferred to Saint Joseph’s from Fairfield University midway through his freshman year, was a four-year starter for the Monks. Primarily a third baseman, he also logged time in the outfield and as a designated hitter while helping St. Joe’s claim a GNAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in each of his four seasons on the diamond.

Markakis kicked off his coaching career shortly after his collegiate playing days came to a close, as he joined former Major Leaguer Matt Antonelli as the Associate Head Coach of a 16U AAU National Team. Markakis and Antonelli, both graduates of St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts, have plans to expand the AAU program throughout the New England Region.

Cousins with MLB veteran outfielder Nick Markakis, who played nine years for the Baltimore Orioles and signed a four-year deal with the Atlanta Braves during the 2014 offseason, Alex recently became a liaison to an Area Scout for the New York Yankees.
