HENNIKER, NH - The #5 Saint Joseph's College Field
Hockey team was required to complete an ECAC D III Quarterfinal
suspended game vs. #4 Wheaton College on Friday, 11/9 at 3:30 on
the Campus of New England College. The Monks advance after winning
the shootout round by a 3-2 margin. SO Julia
Ostrowski (Albany, NY) scored the game winning goal as the
4th shooter for St. Joe's in the second shootout round. FY
goalkeeper Kat Simoes (Wakefield, MA) made a big
save on Wheaton's 4th shooter to help preserve the victory.
The game began on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton, MA on
Wednesday @ 2:00 PM and ended with what everyone thought was a
Monks 2-1 win in a sudden-victory shootout round. FY Alyssa
Dunn (Standish, ME) scored as the second shooter in the
round as the team celebrated around her, all in tears of joy. The
following morning, phones were ringing off the hook in the St.
Joe's athletic office as the ECAC officials had deemed the game
incomplete. The game officials had ordered the teams to take their
sudden victory shootout turns one round too soon, said the
officials.
St. Joe's and Wheaton College agreed to meet at a neutral site
halfway between their campuses, New England College in Henniker,
NH. The shootout began at 3:30 PM. The teams began the shootout
from where the prior sudden-victory round had ended, with both
teams having taken 2 shots apiece and the Monks leading 1-0. Each
team scored twice in the second shootout set, leaving Saint
Joseph's College as the team left standing in the thrilling game
spanning three days and several sleepless nights for Coach Rupert
Lewis.
St. Joe's will host Plymouth State @ 1:00 PM, Saturday 11/10. This
is an important victory for a Field Hockey program that has gone
from one win 2 years ago to six wins last season and 13 victories
in '07 in Coach Rupert Lewis' 3rd season at Saint Joseph's College.
