9/27/14 – Hendrix Provides Offense, Monks Top Lasers, 2-0

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) tied a career high with two goals to help lift Saint Joseph's College (6-1, 2-0 GNAC) past Lasell College (2-7, 0-2 GNAC), 2-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey match at Mercy Field on Saturday afternoon.

For Saint Joseph's, a member of the North Atlantic Conference for the last six seasons, the GNAC contest counts as the first ever played at Mercy Field. The GNAC, the Monks' primary conference, began sponsoring field hockey this fall.

Hendrix scored both of her goals on penalty corner plays, with the first marker being scored in the 29th minute of the first half. Freshman defender Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) injected the ball into play, from the right side of the Lasell goal, with a pass to Hendrix, who was stationed at the top of the circle. Utilizing the space, the senior midfielder quickly turned and rifled a shot that deflected off the foot of Lasers freshman keeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) into the cage, lifting the hosts to a 1-0 edge going into intermission.

Saint Joseph's, which held sizeable leads in both shots (28-0) and penalty corners (19-0) in the triumph, continued to place tremendous pressure on the Lasers' defense early in the second half and the effort quickly paid dividends. Shortly after junior Amanda Celata (Dedham, Mass.) was stopped on a breakaway, the Monks were awarded another corner and capitalized when Hendrix – unmarked at the left goal post – took a pass from Celata and buried the ball into an empty cage just 2:40 into the second stanza for the 2-0 lead.

Landry kept the visitors in the game with an outstanding effort, making 19 saves in the losing bid. St. Joe's sophomore keeper Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) went untested in recording her fourth shutout of the season.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 13-3 in the history of the series with Lasell College. The Monks have not allowed a goal in the last 236:04 minutes of play and have outshot opponents by a combined 79-6 margin over the last four contests.

Saint Joseph's is off until next Saturday when the team plays at Anna Maria College in a GNAC match slated to start at 6:00 PM. Lasell travels to Becker College on Tuesday for a 4:30 PM non-conference contest.
