Monks Tipped by Wildcats, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (3-3, 2-0 GNAC) edged Saint Joseph's College (1-3, 1-1 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team could find the back of the net for the first 45 minutes. Johnson & Wales opened the scoring when Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) sent the ball towards the net and senior Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, NY) redirected it into the goal for her first tally of the season.

Ten minutes later, JWU pushed the margin to 2-0 thanks to a Monks' own goal. Sophomore Madeline Larson (Cantonsville, Md.) fired a shot that bounced off a SJC defender and past the goalkeeper.

The Monks responded by scoring their lone goal four minutes later. Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) got the rebound off her own shot and put it past JWU keeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.). The Monks pressed the Wildcats in the final 10 minutes, getting off four more shots but they could not come up with the equalizer.

Saint Joseph's had a 10-6 advantage in shots, but Nolan came through with five saves for JWU to get the victory. Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) gave up two goals for the Monks and was saddled with the loss.

Saint Joseph's returns to play with a non-conference game at Springfield College on Tuesday at 6:00 PM.
