STANDISH, Maine – Senior Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) punched home a penalty-stroke goal 9:29 into the second overtime period to propel Saint Joseph's College (5-3) past UMaine-Farmington (3-5), 2-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
As the 1-1 stalemate implies, the in-state rivals played very evenly during the 70 minutes of regulation, but the Monks seemed to control the pace in extra play as evidenced by a 7-2 shots advantage. The efforts finally paid off at the 94:29 mark when a shot by junior Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.) became lodged under Beavers senior keeper Alyssa Arsenault (Winthrop, Maine), a play resulting in a foul inside the circle. Winslow stepped up to attempt the penalty stroke and lifted a shot to the top right corner, just beyond Arsenault's reach, to clinch the victory.
In regulation, Saint Joseph's found the scoreboard at the 15:50 mark when junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) slammed in a loose ball following a scrum in front of the net. Senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) was credited with an assist on the play.
UMaine-Farmington managed to tie the contest between the two 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifiers in the 51st minute when senior Sarita Crandall (Farmington, Maine) scored off a penalty corner.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's junior netminder Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made six saves, including a couple of diving stops in overtime, while Arsenault notched seven saves in a losing effort.
Both goalies received help from their defenders, as the Beavers made four defensive stops – two apiece by Torrie Nightingale (Bangor, Maine) and Andrea Stemm (Gorham, Maine) – and the Monks posted a pair of defensive saves with Winslow and Meghan Burke (Falmouth, Mass.) each making a stop.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held slim advantages in shots (15-10), shots on goal (13-9), and penalty corners (11-10) on the evening.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 13-21 in the history of the series with UMaine-Farmington and has now defeated the Beavers in five-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2013 campaign. Including tonight's result, two or fewer scores have decided each of the last 12 contests between the rivals.
