Springfield Blanks Saint Joseph’s, 4-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield College (5-1) defeated previously unbeaten Saint Joseph's College (7-1), 4-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest on Tuesday evening.

SUMMARY

Springfield, which leads NCAA DIII in scoring (6.80 goals per game), grabbed an early lead when junior Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) scored her first of three goals just 1:45 into the contest. Conley, the NCAA DIII leader in goals (2.0 GPG) and points (4.4 PPG), struck again 10 minutes later and freshman Holly Rivers (Danbury, Conn.) lifted her team to a 3-0 cushion in the 33rd minute.

Conley capped the game scoring at the 57:22 mark with her 13th goal of the season.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's senior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made three saves and allowed a pair of goals in just over 30 minutes and sophomore Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) gave up two goals with two saves in nearly 40 minutes between the posts.

Springfield senior Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) stopped all nine shots she faced in the victory.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's suffered the setback despite holding significant leads in shots (18-10) and penalty corners (10-3) on the evening.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Springfield senior Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) tallied three assists
  • Tonight's loss is the Monks' first shutout setback since SJC fell to Southern Maine, 1-0, on October 23rd, 2017
  • Prior to this evening, St. Joe's had not allowed as many as four goals since suffering a 6-0 setback at the hands of Kean University on September 17th, 2017

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 2-1 in the history of the series with Springfield College, a team the Monks defeated by a 2-1 score last fall (9/20/17).

Saint Joseph's will host Simmons College Saturday in a GNAC contest slated to begin at 11:00 AM.
