Monks Topple Wildcats, 7-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Saint Joseph's College (13-1, 5-0 GNAC) toppled Johnson & Wales University (3-10, 1-5 GNAC), 7-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's junior forward Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored three goals and senior defender Arianna Kahler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) added three assists to help the Monks extend their winning streak to six games.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Pomerleau netted a pair of goals in the first seven minutes and Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine), Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine), and Logan Champlin (Alfred, Maine) scored a goal apiece to lift the Monks to a 5-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Pomerleau and senior Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.) both hit pay dirt before Johnson & Wales freshman Jillian Miele (Wilmington, Mass.) scored in the 65th to account for the 7-1 final.

The JWU strike was the first goal the Monks had allowed in 417 minutes and 26 seconds – the last goal given up came in a 4-0 loss to Springfield College on September 18th.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's senior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made one save in 45:34 minutes to while sophomore Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) allowed a goal and made one stop in 24:26 minutes of relief.

JWU senior goalie Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) turned away 10 shots in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (29-7), shots on goal (17-3), and penalty corners in the victory.

Saint Joseph's is now 5-1 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University.
