SJC Golf Caps Season with NEIGA Championship Appearance

BREWSTER, MA - Saint Joseph's College finished in a tie for 30th with a 667 team score in the 77th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship, which took place at The Captains Course on Monday and Tuesday.

For the Monks, sophomore Kevin Richardson (Coventry, Conn.) posted a 162 two-day score and finished in a tie for 94th overall. After notching a career-low 78 on the second day, senior co-captain T.J. Garske (Federal Way, Wash.) was one stroke behind his teammate and finished in a tie for 104th in the annual event.

Jake Brown '13 (Lewiston, Maine) carded a 169 and ended in a tie for 128th, Ebb Walton '12 (Blue Hill, Maine) shot a 173 and finished in a tie for 144th, and Kyle Bennett '12 (Yarmouth, Maine) registered a 212 and placed 166th overall.

For St. Joe's, the NEIGA Championship closes out the 2011 season.

Brewster, Mass -- Teams from 35 colleges and universities across New England gathered Sunday through Tuesday, October 16-18, 2011 for the 77th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship.  The event attracted 168 golfers to The Captains Golf Course and its 36-hole layout on Cape Cod.  NEIGA was pleased to have Cleveland Golf / Srixon return as the 'Presenting Sponsor".

The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes 44 member colleges and universities in New England and is considered to be the oldest and largest college golf tournament.  It is unique in that Divisions I, II and III compete together.

Steven Zychowski of The College of the Holy Cross was the medalist by one shot with a two-day score of 146.  Zychowski started the day in a three-way tie after shooting a 1-under 71 on the Port Course Monday.

Division II Bentley University, under the leadership of Coach Mickey Herron, won the overall championship with a two-day score of 606. Bentley started the day four strokes behind Bryant and Holy Cross. Division I Bryant University led the Division I teams with a score of 607. The Division III champion with a total of 617 was Salem State University.

At a banquet held on Sunday evening at The Irish Village Restaurant, the following awards were presented. Robert Sheldon of Tufts University was announced as the Gordon McCullough (Coach) Award recipient. George Jacobson, Executive Director of the NEIGA from 1991-2010 received the special recognition award which was renamed the George A. Jacobson Special Recognition Award.

Special events, all sponsored by Cleveland golf, were held on Monday afternoon at the finish of the first round.  The long-drive contest was won by Brian Foley of Saint Anselm College with a distance of 296 yards.  Tim Carlson of Husson University won the putting contest and the bunker contest winner was Kevin Wheeler of Nichols College.
